A stream key routes OBS’s encoder feed to YouTube; it does not select a playlist. Verify playlist organization in YouTube Studio rather than expecting a different key to assign it.
What YouTube events, stream keys, and OBS settings control
YouTube Studio manages the scheduled event: its title, timing, audience-facing watch page, and other available metadata. OBS sends the encoder feed to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key. In YouTube’s words, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
A key is not a playlist selector. The available YouTube documentation explains how keys route an encoder feed but does not establish that a key can assign a stream or resulting video to a playlist. Check the scheduled event editor for playlist controls; if no suitable control is available, add the resulting video to the intended playlist through its video details after it is created.
Schedule a separate event for each broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go Live.
- Open the Manage tab and choose Schedule Stream. YouTube documents scheduling from this area in its encoder live-stream setup instructions.
- Create a separate event for each broadcast that needs its own title, start time, watch page, or playlist organization. Enter the event details in YouTube Studio and inspect the editor for any playlist control actually available in your account’s current interface.
- Choose whether to create new settings or reuse settings from a previous stream. Reuse is convenient when the previous event’s settings are wanted: YouTube says it copies metadata, the stream key, and other settings. Review and edit the new event before publishing so an old title, time, or key is not carried forward unintentionally. See Manage live stream settings.
- Save or schedule the event, and keep track of its scheduled time and selected key. YouTube says a scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds, where viewers can select Notify me; its URL can also be shared. See Get started with live streaming.
Organize multiple stream keys in OBS
OBS Profiles are a useful way to store distinct stream and output configurations. Name each profile so its purpose is clear, such as “Weekly Q&A — scheduled event A.” OBS documents that Profiles contain stream settings and output settings; they do not contain scenes. If the broadcasts also need different scene layouts, create clearly named Scene Collections separately. See the OBS Profiles guide and YouTube’s stream-key settings help.

- In OBS, create a Profile for each distinct reusable stream configuration and give it an unmistakable name. Menu labels can vary by OBS version; use the Profile controls in the current application.
- Open that Profile’s stream configuration, choose the appropriate YouTube service/connection method, and enter the stream URL and key associated with the intended scheduled event or reusable key.
- Save the Profile, then switch to another Profile and configure its corresponding key and settings. Do not assume switching Profiles also changes scenes; create or select a matching Scene Collection if needed.
- Treat each stream key as a secret credential. Avoid screenshots, shared documents, or public posts that expose it. If a key is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the corresponding OBS Profile.
YouTube allows custom stream keys to be reused. A single reusable key can be simpler for a consistent encoder destination; separate keys can help an operator distinguish configurations. Neither choice assigns playlists automatically.
Start the correct scheduled broadcast
- Before the event, open the scheduled stream in YouTube Studio and confirm its title, start time, and intended organization.
- In OBS, select the Profile for that event and confirm its key matches the scheduled YouTube stream. Check the selected Scene Collection too if the production layout differs.
- Start streaming in OBS. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, follow the current encoder flow to check the incoming preview and select Go live where required. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting with the stream URL and key, then proceeding through preview and going live.
- After the broadcast, check the resulting video in YouTube Studio. If playlist assignment was not available during scheduling, use the video’s details to add it to the intended playlist.
Understand YouTube’s simultaneous-stream limits
YouTube Help states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key, with both limits applying at the same time (YouTube, 2026). Using multiple keys does not bypass the channel-wide limit. See YouTube’s live-streaming help for current guidance; limits and interface details can change.

Choose between one key, multiple keys, or reused event settings
| Choice | Useful when | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| One reusable stream key | The same encoder destination and configuration will be used repeatedly. | It does not organize events into playlists; confirm the scheduled event and metadata in YouTube Studio. |
| Separate custom keys and OBS Profiles | Distinct configurations need clear labels to reduce operator mix-ups. | A Profile stores stream/output settings, not scenes. A key still routes the encoder feed rather than choosing a playlist. |
| Create a new scheduled event | The broadcast needs its own event details and you do not want to carry over old settings. | Configure the matching OBS key and verify any playlist control in the event editor. |
| Reuse prior event settings | The new event should inherit the previous event’s metadata, key, and other settings. | Review and edit copied details before scheduling; YouTube permits edits after reuse. |
Troubleshoot the common mix-ups
- The broadcast appears under the wrong event: OBS may be using a different key than the scheduled event expects. Stop and verify the event in YouTube Studio and the selected OBS Profile before trying again.
- The stream is not assigned to the expected playlist: a different key will not fix this. Check the event editor for playlist controls; if unavailable, add the created video through its YouTube Studio video details.
- The new event has an old title or other settings: Reuse settings copies metadata and the key as well as other settings. Edit the event before scheduling or create it with new settings.
- The scenes do not match the broadcast: Profiles do not save scenes. Select the correct Scene Collection independently.
- YouTube will not accept another active stream: check both concurrent-stream ceilings—10 per channel and 3 per key—as both apply simultaneously.
- The OBS stream connects but viewers cannot watch yet: check the Live Control Room preview and complete its current go-live step when prompted.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than operate scheduled OBS broadcasts, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a live camera.
