To rotate several files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and add the intended files to its playlist. YouTube’s Loop control is for playback in the YouTube player; it does not change the media OBS sends to a live stream.
First, identify which OBS source you added
The fix depends on whether OBS is playing one local file or a list of files. A Media Source represents an individual media file. A VLC Video source can play a playlist.

These settings are documented by the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide (published January 11, 2022); labels or behavior may differ in a later OBS version. YouTube describes its Loop control in its viewer playback instructions.
Set up a multi-file rotation in OBS
Use VLC Video and verify the playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and will not appear without VLC. Match the architecture: OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene where you want the rotation. If the source is unavailable, check the VLC installation and architecture first.
- Open the source’s media playlist and confirm it contains every intended, distinct file. A playlist that contains only one file will only show that file, even if Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want the list to start again after its final item finishes.
- Check Shuffle Playlist separately. It randomizes the order; it is not the setting that makes a playlist loop.
Check what happens when the source is hidden
VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. OBS lists “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the default. If the source becomes hidden and visible again during scene changes, it may restart at the beginning. Choose a visibility behavior that suits the scene and test the transition.

If you intend to play just one file
A Media Source is appropriate for a single clip. Check its Loop setting: when enabled, the same file plays again at its end. Also inspect Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS lists this setting as on by default; when the source becomes active again, playback can begin from the start. That behavior can look like an unexplained repeat if the source is repeatedly hidden and shown.
Troubleshoot the repeat in order
- Confirm the source type. If it is Media Source, it is a single-file source. If you need multiple files to rotate, use VLC Video.
- Inspect the actual file list. In VLC Video, make sure the playlist contains all the different files you expect. Loop Playlist only repeats the list that is present.
- Separate looping from restarting. For Media Source, check Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active. For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist and Visibility Behaviour.
- Check whether order is changing. Shuffle Playlist randomizes the sequence; it does not turn end-of-list looping on or off.
- Ignore YouTube’s viewer-side Loop for this problem. It repeats playback in the YouTube player, not the media in OBS’s live broadcast.
- If the cause remains unclear, gather details before changing more settings. Note the OBS source type, exact playlist contents, visibility setting, scene transitions, and OBS log. Without those details, a specific cause for an individual installation cannot be established.
An OBS Project forum post from April 20, 2020 describes one user’s playlist edits restarting media playback in a running YouTube live stream. That is an individual report, not evidence that playlist edits explain every repeated-video issue.
