On a desktop, use your browser’s Print preview and save the page as a PDF—but inspect the preview before saving. A PDF is a print rendering, not a promise to reproduce every interactive or animated detail. If a chart is missing, the fix depends on whether it is inline SVG, an SVG image, a CSS background, or a canvas drawing.
Save the page with your browser’s print preview
Chrome and Firefox document printing a webpage to a PDF from the browser. The exact controls can vary by operating system and setup, so check the preview and the saved file rather than assuming the result matches the screen.
- Let the page finish loading. If a chart is interactive, select the view or data you want included.
- Open print preview. In Chrome on Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+P; on Mac, press Command+P. In Firefox, open the menu and choose Print.
- Choose Save as PDF in Chrome or Save to PDF in Firefox.
- Review every preview page. Adjust orientation, scale, margins, or background printing if those controls are available and improve the result.
- Save the PDF, open it, and inspect the pages containing charts.

Why SVG and canvas charts can behave differently
SVG: identify how the graphic is embedded
SVG is vector graphics, but a chart’s print result depends partly on how the page embeds it and what it needs to render. An inline SVG, an SVG loaded as an image, and an SVG used as a CSS background are not interchangeable cases. SVG used in an image context may have JavaScript disabled and external resources such as images or stylesheets blocked, depending on browser behavior. If a chart is absent or incomplete, identify its embedding method and whether it relies on scripts or external assets before looking for a fix; there is no single print setting that resolves every SVG problem. Canvas: the chart is a bitmap drawing
A canvas chart is drawn into a bitmap surface rather than represented as vector chart elements. Changing its displayed size with CSS scales the existing rendering and can distort it; the canvas drawing dimensions should be set through the element’s width and height attributes or JavaScript. The exported or printed chart therefore needs enough pixels for its intended physical size. See MDN’s canvas reference.
If you control the webpage, prepare it for printing
Use print-specific layout rules
Add CSS for print so the page gives charts a sensible printable layout. The @media print rule can change presentation for printing, while @page can set page dimensions, orientation, and margins. The beforeprint and afterprint events can help adapt page UI around printing. Ensure scripts have drawn the chart before invoking print. MDN documents these options in its printing guide.

Export canvas to an image when needed
If you own the page and print rendering still omits or mishandles a canvas, a fallback is to export the finished drawing to an image and print that image. HTMLCanvasElement.toDataURL() defaults to PNG and encodes at 96 dpi for formats that support resolution metadata. For large images, MDN recommends toBlob() instead of creating a large in-memory data URL. Export can fail with a SecurityError if the canvas is not origin-clean, such as when it includes content from another site. A raster export is not a resolution-independent vector chart, so provide enough pixel dimensions for the intended print size. Details are in MDN’s toDataURL() reference.
Firefox also documents HTMLCanvasElement.mozPrintCallback, a specialized Firefox-only author-side API for redrawing a canvas at printer resolution. It is not a general instruction for users or a cross-browser remedy. See MDN’s HTMLCanvasElement reference.

Troubleshoot missing or clipped charts
- The chart is absent in preview: determine whether it is inline SVG, an SVG image, a CSS background, or canvas. For SVG, check whether it depends on JavaScript or external resources; for a page you control, inspect print CSS and chart drawing timing.
- The chart appears but is cut off: adjust orientation, scale, or margins in print preview, then inspect the affected page again.
- The canvas looks blurry or stretched: CSS scaling may be stretching the bitmap. If you control the page, set appropriate canvas drawing dimensions and use print-specific layout rules.
- A canvas export raises SecurityError: the canvas may not be origin-clean because it contains cross-origin content. The export method cannot be assumed to work for every page.
- The saved PDF differs from the preview or screen: reopen the file and check all chart pages. Try the browser’s other print path only as a diagnostic; the evidence does not establish one browser as universally better for complex SVG and canvas output.
