Check that the important images and other resources are present before sharing it. This saves a snapshot of one page; it does not back up a whole website or schedule future captures.
An archive and a screenshot are related but different: the Wayback Machine can preserve resources for replay, while a screenshot is a visual record. If you need both, save the page to the Wayback Machine and retain a separate screenshot file.
Save one webpage with the Wayback Machine
- Open the Save Page Now form.
- Enter the page’s full URL, including its scheme (such as
https://), and submit it. - Wait for the save request to finish. If it succeeds, the Wayback Machine provides a permanent URL for the capture.
- Open that returned URL. Check the captured text and important images, and try any essential interactions that need to work in the archived copy.
- Keep the exact archive URL, including its capture timestamp, and share that URL when you want others to view the saved version.
Save Page Now captures the single URL you submit. It does not automatically save links from that page, other pages in its directory, or the rest of the site. Internet Archive describes this as a one-time save of a specific page in its Wayback Machine help.
What the Wayback capture preserves—and what it may not
Internet Archive says a saved page is captured with its images and CSS, but that does not guarantee every resource or feature will be available in replay. A successful capture can still be incomplete.

- Images, stylesheets, scripts, or other resources may not have been archived.
- Some JavaScript-dependent features rely on the original site’s server and may not work when replayed.
- Server-side image maps and orphan pages can cause problems.
- Robots.txt restrictions or an owner’s request can prevent pages from appearing in the archive.
- Password-protected or otherwise inaccessible pages may not be captured. A site may also block crawling, or SSL settings may interfere with a save.
When an archived resource is missing, a link or image in the replay may resolve to live content instead. If historical accuracy matters, check the capture date in the archive URL and verify key resources; do not assume every item displayed came from that capture.
Use a screenshot as a separate visual record
A screenshot records how a page looked in a browser at a particular moment. It does not provide the same kind of replayable archived page as a Wayback capture. If a visual record is required, take a screenshot with your browser’s screenshot function and save that file separately from the archive URL.

The Wayback Machine’s current Save Page Now screenshot control could not be confirmed in official documentation. Inspect the current interface if you are looking for such an option; do not rely on its availability. A screenshot does not replace checking the Wayback capture, and an archive URL does not replace keeping a separate screenshot file when you need a visual record.
Save from your browser with the official extension
If you archive pages regularly, the Internet Archive’s official browser extension provides a Save Page Now action for the page currently open, as well as tools for finding older or newer captures. Its project repository lists distribution links for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Store availability and browser compatibility can change, so check the current listing for your browser. The extension is a more convenient way to submit the current page, not a whole-site crawler; the same capture and replay limitations apply.

When you need to preserve more than one page
Save Page Now is for a one-time capture of one URL, not recurring preservation. For an organization that needs recurring crawls and preservation support, Internet Archive describes Archive-It as a paid subscription service with technical and web-archivist support. It is an institutional option to investigate, not a requirement for an individual one-time capture.

Troubleshooting a missing or incomplete capture
The Save Page Now request does not succeed
Check that you submitted a complete, publicly accessible URL. Password protection, crawl restrictions, owner exclusions, site-side blocking, or SSL settings can prevent a successful capture. If the site does not permit crawling, Save Page Now may not be able to archive it.

The archive opens, but images or styling are missing
Some assets may not have been captured. Internet Archive’s help identifies missing resources as a common replay limitation. Check the capture date and inspect the page’s key images and styles instead of assuming a successful save preserved every asset.
Interactive features fail in replay
JavaScript features that depend on the original server may not function in an archived copy. A screenshot can document the visible result, but it will not make the archived interaction work.
A link in the archived page opens live content
The linked resource may be missing from the capture and resolving to the live site. For a trustworthy historical reference, verify important linked content against the intended archived timestamp rather than treating every replayed link as part of the same snapshot.

Keep the archive URL and include its capture date when it matters to your reader. Cite the original webpage in the usual way and add the Wayback Machine capture information. Internet Archive notes that there is no established MLA format for Wayback Machine resources and recommends including additional information; follow the citation style required by your institution or publication.
