To make a readable snapshot and check later whether that saved file has changed, print the webpage to PDF, calculate a SHA-256 digest of the PDF, and keep the full digest with the file’s URL and capture time. The checksum applies to the PDF’s exact bytes—not to the live webpage—and it cannot prove who published the page or when it existed.
What a PDF and checksum do—and do not—preserve
A browser-generated PDF is a fixed rendition of what the page displayed during printing. It is useful for reading and sharing, but it does not necessarily preserve the page’s HTML, linked assets, scripts, interactive behavior, or dynamic content. The Library of Congress describes web archiving as preserving a reproducible copy of a site as it appeared at a particular time, while noting that not all content can be captured. SHA-256 produces a digest for the bytes in a particular file. NIST explains that digests can be used to detect whether data has changed since the digest was generated (Secure Hash Standard, FIPS 180-4). If you edit, optimize, or re-save the PDF, its bytes may change and the old digest may no longer match—even if the pages look identical.
- A matching digest: evidence that the file’s bytes match the file used to create the reference digest, assuming that reference is trustworthy.
- Not proof of authenticity: a checksum alone does not prove the capture date, publisher identity, authorship, truth of claims, or legal admissibility.
- Not a full website capture: a PDF does not guarantee preservation of the underlying site or all its resources.
Save the webpage as a PDF in Chrome
- Prepare the page. Open the exact page and wait for the content you want to preserve to appear. Copy its full URL. Record the date and time, including the timezone, in a note alongside the eventual PDF. The Library of Congress recommends that web archives identify the institution and capture date/time; retaining your own capture context makes the snapshot easier to interpret (Web Archiving FAQ).
- Open print preview. In desktop Chrome, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac. Browser labels and interface details can vary by version and operating system. See Google Chrome Help: Print from Chrome.
- Select PDF output. In the print destination control, choose Save as PDF. Review the page range, orientation, scale, margins, headers and footers, and background graphics. Adjust them for the material—for example, background graphics may matter when colors or shaded sections convey meaning.
- Save and inspect. Save the file, then open it and check that the intended text, images, and page breaks are present. If content is missing or pagination is poor, adjust print settings and create a new PDF. Treat the revised file as a new file whose digest must be calculated again.
Calculate and preserve the SHA-256 digest
Run a trusted local checksum utility on the PDF you actually intend to keep. The sources cited here establish the SHA-256 standard and Chrome’s PDF workflow, but do not document platform-specific checksum commands; use the help documentation for your operating system or checksum utility rather than copying an unverified command.

- Calculate the PDF’s SHA-256 digest after the final save.
- Copy the entire digest exactly into a text record next to the PDF. Include the PDF filename, full source URL, capture date and time with timezone, browser and relevant print settings, and the digest algorithm (SHA-256).
- Keep the original digest somewhere that cannot be silently changed together with the PDF if you need tamper evidence. A checksum stored only beside the PDF can detect accidental changes, but someone able to replace both files could replace the reference digest too.
- When checking later, recalculate SHA-256 over the same PDF and compare every character of the full digest. A match means the compared file bytes match the reference; it does not establish when those bytes were created.
When a PDF is not enough: WARC and WACZ
If your goal is to preserve a website and its resources rather than produce a readable printout, consider a web-archiving workflow that captures multiple resources and associated metadata. The Library of Congress calls WARC “a method for combining multiple digital resources into an aggregate archival file together with related information” (WARC format description). WARC is its preferred web-archive format, but it does not guarantee perfect replay or capture every kind of material, such as some streaming, deep-web, database, or otherwise unsupported content.
WACZ is a packaged web-archive format with a Data Package manifest that can include SHA-256 or MD5 checks for each file in the package (WACZ format description). This is broader than hashing one exported PDF: package-level checks address files in the archive package, but do not on their own prove a capture’s date or publisher identity.

Troubleshooting and integrity checks
- The PDF omits a section or image: wait for the desired content to load before printing, review print preview, and check page range and background graphics. Some content may not be rendered in print output; a PDF is not a complete capture of all site resources.
- The digest changes after you re-save the PDF: calculate a fresh digest for the new final file and retain it as a new reference. A visual match does not guarantee byte-for-byte identity.
- The later digest differs unexpectedly: confirm you are checking the same file, not an edited or re-exported copy, and compare the complete values. The mismatch means the bytes differ from those represented by the original digest; it does not identify what changed.
- The digest matches but you need proof of capture time or source: a checksum cannot supply that proof. Keep contemporaneous URL and timestamp records, and use a suitable preservation or formal records process if your organization or jurisdiction requires stronger evidence.
