Then test Ethernet, check OBS and YouTube stream health, and isolate router, software, or ISP problems one change at a time. A headline speed-test result—especially download speed—does not show how much stable upload capacity your stream actually has.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not
OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator help distinguish a connection problem from other symptoms. If the counter keeps rising and the indicator turns yellow or red, OBS says the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS sends directly to YouTube; OBS does not operate an intermediary streaming server. Its connection guide says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Viewer buffering is a separate symptom. Viewers can experience loading because of their devices or internet connections even when your OBS stream is stable. If OBS shows no drops but viewers report buffering, investigate playback conditions rather than assuming the creator’s upload connection is at fault. OBS’s buffering guide covers that distinction.
Measure upload capacity during realistic apartment use
Run upload-speed tests at times and under conditions that resemble your planned stream, including when other residents are using the shared broadband. Download speed is not the relevant figure for sending a live stream. YouTube advises ensuring the outbound connection can carry the stream bitrate and notes that a high-speed office connection can still leave an individual with limited capacity when many people share it. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom; its page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

OBS’s connection guide, dated 2024, gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate. Treat this as a starting estimate, not a guarantee for shared broadband: the amount available to your device can change with household activity and connection stability. YouTube’s 20% headroom advice and OBS’s 75% starting point are both guidance, not a substitute for testing at busy times. Start conservatively and watch the OBS counter and YouTube stream health as you adjust.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion recommendations; they are not guarantees that a particular apartment connection can sustain them. YouTube’s page does not state a publication year.

For example, if your upload tests fluctuate when the apartment is busy, choosing 1080p60 simply because a speed test once showed a high result can make drops more likely. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the stream remains stable in a representative test. YouTube publishes separate bitrate tables for AV1 and H.265, as well as other resolutions and frame rates; check the current table for the exact encoder configuration you use.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s general encoder guidance specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Test the local connection and OBS setup in order
- Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi under otherwise similar conditions, then check whether OBS’s dropped-frames counter still rises. A cable improves the link between the computer and router; it cannot fix an overloaded broadband connection or an ISP routing problem.
- Try another available YouTube ingest server. If the option is available in your OBS setup, test a different server and compare the results. This can help identify whether the route or server choice is involved; it does not prove that the home connection is adequate.
- Check VPNs and network-related software. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, and network-optimization utilities as possible factors. Do not leave security protection disabled. If a temporary diagnostic suggests it is interfering, restore protection and configure an appropriate OBS exception instead.
- Check network drivers and physical equipment. If drops persist, check that the computer’s network drivers are current and inspect the modem, router, cables, and other network devices for faults or loose connections.
- On Windows, treat OBS network options as experiments. OBS says users have reported that Network Optimizations and TCP pacing can help; they are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce quality to respond to connection problems, but OBS describes it as a fallback rather than a repair for the underlying connection.
Change one variable at a time and compare the OBS counter and YouTube stream health. If several settings change together, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered.
Consider router QoS only if you can manage the shared router
Quality of Service (QoS) or device-priority controls on some routers can prioritize one device when the network is overloaded. They require access to the router’s administration settings, and their availability and interface depend on the model and firmware. For example, TP-Link’s guidance for supported models describes allocating more bandwidth to a prioritized device when the network is overloaded. QoS does not add broadband capacity, and it may not be available to a tenant who cannot administer the apartment router. Check the current router’s capabilities before considering a replacement.

Test the stream before an important broadcast
After choosing a sustainable bitrate and making any local changes, run a test stream under conditions similar to the real broadcast. Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and YouTube’s stream health while other residents are likely to be online. If the stream is stable only at quiet times, it may still fail during the hours that matter; repeat the test during representative shared use.
If drops continue, give the ISP useful evidence
When bitrate reductions and local checks do not resolve persistent drops, contact the ISP with the times the problem occurred, upload-test results from comparable busy and quiet periods, and OBS logs. OBS identifies the network path and hardware or ISP as possible causes. This evidence can help distinguish a local Wi-Fi issue from a problem beyond the router; a single speed test cannot establish the cause.
