For a 720p, 60 fps H.264 stream from an Ubuntu playlist, start with YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate, constant-bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (120 frames), and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps. Send the stream over RTMPS using the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The command below is a template: confirm your FFmpeg build, playlist compatibility, upload capacity, and stream health before relying on it.
Recommended YouTube settings for 720p at 60 fps
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 8 Mbps for 720p60 and lists 3 Mbps as the minimum. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. At 60 frames per second, those intervals correspond to GOP sizes of 120 and 240 frames, respectively; the frame counts are calculated from YouTube’s time guidance, not separately published settings. YouTube’s encoder settings also recommend RTMPS where available. YouTube Help
| Setting | Starting value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | The command uses FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder; it must be present in your FFmpeg build. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280×720 at 60 fps | Scale and frame-rate conversion in the example produce this output. They may alter the source’s original appearance or motion cadence. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum | These are YouTube’s H.264 figures for 720p60. Choose a rate your connection can sustain; the minimum is not a promise of acceptable quality for every source. |
| Rate control | CBR | The example sets matching target and maximum rates as a practical way to constrain video bitrate. Confirm behavior for your encoder and FFmpeg version. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds; no more than 4 seconds | For 60 fps, use -g 120; the four-second upper limit corresponds to -g 240. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube also lists MP3 as an audio codec option; AAC is used in this template. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS preferred | Use the ingest endpoint and stream key displayed for your broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. |
YouTube also lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR. These can guide a compatible H.264 SDR encode; they are not all universal requirements for every stream. The figures above are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a specific computer, connection, or command will stream reliably.

Make playlist entries compatible
The example uses the concat demuxer, whose inputs should have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. A playlist mixing files with different stream layouts or timing may trigger timestamp warnings, irregular frames, or other transition problems. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion describes this constraint and another user’s errors with a heterogeneous playlist; it is an illustrative report, not evidence that every mixed playlist fails. Replace the example paths with the real locations. The command below uses -safe 0 to permit paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; only use a playlist file you control.
Get the YouTube ingest address and stream key
Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream you are setting up. Copy the ingest address and the stream key shown there; the credentials are specific to that stream. In the command, replace the placeholder RTMPS destination with the address and key from your own Live Control Room. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a shared script, screenshot, log, or public repository.

Start the 720p60 playlist stream with FFmpeg
This starting template assumes the playlist is suitable for the concat demuxer, the local build has libx264, and the RTMPS destination is replaced with your own. It is not a tested, universal command:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=60,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-address>/<stream-key>'
Replace playlist.txt if your list has another name and replace the destination placeholder with the actual RTMPS address and stream key. Avoid saving the key in a script that others can access or in logs that may be shared.

What the command’s options do
-rereads the playlist at its native playback rate rather than consuming the input as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-vfscales to fit within 1280×720 while preserving aspect ratio, pads to the full frame, converts to 60 fps, and outputs the broadly compatibleyuv420ppixel format. The scale and pad choices add borders when the source aspect ratio differs from 16:9.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding.-preset veryfastis a practical encoder-speed choice, not a YouTube requirement; a slower preset may increase CPU demand.-profile:v highis a template choice, not a universal requirement.-b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16Mtarget 8 Mbps video, cap the maximum at 8 Mbps, and set a two-second-sized rate-control buffer. Matching target and maximum rates are a common way to constrain rate, but actual behavior depends on the encoder and build.-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0set a 120-frame GOP and discourage shorter keyframe intervals. At 60 fps, 120 frames is two seconds. Verify the resulting stream behavior with your installed encoder.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.-f flvpackages the outgoing stream for the RTMP-family ingest workflow. The destination should be the RTMPS address supplied by YouTube.
The scale, frame-rate conversion, preset, profile, buffer size, and other encoding controls in this template are practical choices, not individually mandated by YouTube. The machine must be able to encode the actual playlist in real time; there is no universal minimum hardware requirement established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream and monitor its health
Do not judge readiness from a command that starts successfully. YouTube advises testing before going live, including audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube Help: encoder settings and testing guidance
- Run the real playlist through the full command and confirm FFmpeg keeps up with real-time output rather than falling behind.
- Watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Check for dropped frames, interruptions, or ingest warnings.
- Listen for clear audio, confirm both stereo channels behave as expected, and inspect motion, aspect ratio, scaling, and transitions between every type of playlist item.
- Check that your upload connection sustains the encoded video and audio bitrate with headroom. YouTube advises choosing settings that the connection can reliably support and testing upload speed. If it cannot sustain the stream, reduce quality or improve the connection rather than assuming 8 Mbps will work everywhere.
- Before leaving a loop unattended, verify that the playlist reaches its end and starts again as intended, and that the broadcast remains healthy through transitions.
Troubleshoot common failures
- “Unknown encoder” or missing
libx264: The installed FFmpeg build may not include that encoder. Checkffmpeg -encodersand the local encoder help; use a build that supportslibx264or adjust the command to an encoder available in your build. - Authentication or connection failure: Recheck the RTMPS endpoint and stream key against the Live Control Room for the intended broadcast. Avoid reusing a stale destination or exposing the key.
- Playlist errors, timestamp warnings, or broken transitions: Inspect whether every concat input has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize mismatched files or test transitions individually before relying on the combined playlist.
- FFmpeg falls behind or the stream drops frames: The computer may not sustain real-time encoding for these files, or the connection may lack upload headroom. Test with the actual playlist; reduce output demands or improve the constrained resource, then check stream health again.
- Black borders, cropping, or unexpected motion: The filter preserves aspect ratio and pads to 16:9; differing source dimensions can therefore produce borders. The explicit 60 fps conversion can also change the cadence of lower-frame-rate footage. Review the preview and change scaling or frame-rate handling only after deciding how you want the source presented.
- Audio is silent, distorted, or unexpectedly mixed: Check that the playlist files contain the expected audio streams and test each transition. Confirm the output is AAC stereo at the intended level and inspect both channels in the YouTube preview.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for a looping playlist
Technical settings do not establish that you have the right to broadcast the playlist or that the content meets YouTube’s policies. Before streaming, confirm you have permission for the video, music, and other included material, including any material that appears only briefly. A playlist that repeats indefinitely still needs to comply with applicable copyright rules and YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and account notices in YouTube Studio before scheduling or starting a broadcast; the encoder settings page is not a complete copyright or monetization policy guide.
