YouTube may end a live broadcast after an encoder stops sending video if that broadcast has auto-stop enabled. Google’s API guide says an auto-stop-enabled broadcast ends around a minute after its bound stream stops sending video—but that is not a guaranteed reconnect window. Check YouTube Studio → Go Live → Live Control Room first: if the broadcast is still active, reconnect the encoder; if it is complete, create a new broadcast.
Why an encoder disconnect can end a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube treats the incoming feed and the viewer-facing broadcast as related but distinct resources. The encoder sends video to a stream; a broadcast is the event viewers watch. The incoming stream can become inactive while the broadcast has its own lifecycle and status. YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams describes this distinction.
A stream key tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. Broadcast settings such as auto-start and auto-stop control whether sending video starts the broadcast and whether stopping video ends it. Google’s Live Streaming API guide says YouTube ends an auto-stop-enabled broadcast around a minute after video stops arriving on its bound live stream. Treat that as documented behavior, not a universal grace period: YouTube does not promise that reconnecting within that time will preserve every broadcast.
If you use Reuse settings to create a stream, YouTube copies settings from the earlier event, including auto-start and auto-stop selections. Check those options when creating or reusing a stream rather than assuming a new event has different disconnect behavior. See Manage live stream settings.

Check the broadcast state before trying to resume
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live → Live Control Room.
- Check whether the broadcast is still live, ended, or waiting for encoder data. Review stream health and any timestamped errors; YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation describes incoming-stream status and health.
- Check the encoder itself: is it running and producing the expected picture and sound? Look at its error messages, software version, and CPU load. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking local audio and video and reviewing encoder errors.
- If local output looks correct but YouTube is not receiving it, check the outbound internet connection. Troubleshoot the network or contact the internet provider if needed.
Resume the stream if its broadcast is still active
If Live Control Room shows the broadcast is still active or awaiting encoder data, restore the encoder connection and use the existing stream URL and key configured for that event. Confirm that the incoming feed becomes active and that preview returns in Live Control Room before considering the recovery complete.
Do not reset the stream key as the first response to a disconnect. YouTube says past streams can reuse their settings and custom stream keys can be reused. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests copying a new key for a third-party encoder startup error, which is a narrower case than every interruption. The key and stream URL are managed in Manage live stream settings.

Start a new broadcast if the previous one is complete
If Live Control Room says the broadcast has ended, restarting the encoder does not guarantee that the completed event will reopen. Create a new stream in Studio (or reuse settings), connect the encoder with the displayed stream URL and key, wait for preview, and click Go Live if the scheduled workflow requires it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide documents creating and starting a stream; it does not promise that a completed broadcast can be reopened at the same watch URL. Plan on the recovery being a new event.
After reconnecting or starting again, verify that YouTube reports the feed as active, check the viewer-facing watch page from another device, and confirm that local recording is running if you rely on one.

Prevent another interruption from becoming an ended event
- Review auto-start and auto-stop deliberately. These settings affect broadcast behavior, and Reuse settings carries them over. Choose settings that suit your workflow; changing them does not guarantee continuity through every disconnect.
- Test a backup encoder before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. This is a test procedure, not evidence that failover is automatically enabled for every setup. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Monitor stream health and recurring errors. Keep encoder software current, inspect CPU load, and test the outbound connection if the feed repeatedly drops. Use YouTube’s troubleshooting steps to narrow down the cause.
- Keep and check a local recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that guidance does not cover a 24/7 stream as a whole. For a continuous feed, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only record; check that your local archive file is actually growing. See the encoder setup guide and live streaming tips.
