OBS Studio crashes can have several causes, so there is no single fix that applies to every computer. Start with OBS Safe Mode to check whether a third-party plugin, script, or WebSocket connection is involved. If that does not change the behavior, isolate conflicting software, check GPU workload and scene complexity, and verify that your operating system and graphics hardware are supported. The crash log, OBS version, operating system, and the action that triggers the crash are needed to identify a specific cause.
What to note before troubleshooting
Record these details before changing settings. They help you compare each test and provide useful information if you need to ask for help.
- Your operating system and version, and your OBS Studio version.
- Whether OBS closes during startup, while streaming or recording, or after a particular action.
- Recent changes, such as a new plugin, driver, overlay, or OBS update.
- The relevant OBS crash log. Preserve it rather than making several changes before you can review it.
A crash that happens only during a particular game or scene may point toward a different diagnostic path than one that happens immediately on launch. The symptom is a clue, not proof of a cause.
1. Test OBS in Safe Mode
OBS Safe Mode starts with third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets disabled. It is a reversible way to check whether an extension is involved; a change in behavior is a clue, not proof of which extension caused the problem. OBS documents the --safe-mode launch parameter on its Launch Parameters page.

- Start OBS in Safe Mode using the option available in your OBS version, or use the documented
--safe-modelaunch parameter. - Try the same action that previously triggered the crash.
- If OBS behaves differently, review recently added or updated plugins, scripts, and WebSocket connections. Disable or update them, then reintroduce them one at a time.
If Safe Mode does not change the symptom, continue to the next checks rather than assuming an extension is responsible.
2. Isolate software conflicts
Some other applications can conflict with OBS and cause crashes or unusual behavior. OBS’s Known Application Conflicts guidance includes on-screen displays, other capture or recording applications, some security software, drivers, and applications such as MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, Discord overlays, and Wacom drivers.

- Close or disable plausible overlays and on-screen displays, then repeat the action that caused the crash.
- If that does not help, test with other game-capture or recording applications closed.
- Consider other applications and drivers identified in OBS’s conflict guidance, testing one at a time so you can tell whether anything changed.
- If security software appears to be involved, check its OBS access or allow-list settings instead of leaving broad protections disabled.
A successful test identifies a useful lead, not necessarily the underlying defect. Restore unrelated applications and settings after testing.
3. Check GPU workload and scene complexity
OBS uses GPU resources to render and composite scenes. GPU pressure is worth investigating when instability occurs while gaming, streaming, or using demanding scenes, but it is not an automatic explanation for every crash. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance recommends freeing GPU capacity and reducing demanding workloads.

- Close other GPU-heavy programs and, when gaming, limit the game’s frame rate to leave capacity for OBS.
- Temporarily simplify the scene. Remove or disable costly sources, browser sources, and filters, then test again.
- If the problem changes, add sources or filters back individually to narrow down the trigger.
- On Windows, OBS documents running OBS as administrator as a troubleshooting step for GPU overload. Treat it as an overload/performance check, not a universal crash fix.
These steps help distinguish a load-related problem from issues that occur even with a simple scene and little activity.
4. Verify system compatibility and laptop GPU selection
Compare your exact operating system and graphics hardware with OBS’s System Requirements. Basic compatibility does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record at a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder setting, and scene complexity; OBS makes this distinction explicitly.

On macOS, check the OBS macOS Versions table for the compatible OBS builds listed for your macOS version. That page was updated 2026-07-29, but compatibility information can change, so check the current table rather than assuming the newest OBS build supports every macOS release.
On a laptop with more than one GPU, check which GPU OBS is using and whether that selection suits your capture method. OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide discusses dual-GPU configurations and recommends the default high-power GPU. Apply that guidance to your particular machine and capture setup rather than treating GPU assignment as a proven cause of every crash.

5. If OBS still crashes
If these checks do not resolve the issue, the crash log is the next useful step toward a specific diagnosis. The available general guidance cannot identify the cause of an individual crash without details from the affected system.
- Keep the crash log and note the time and action associated with the failure.
- Include your OBS version and operating system and version.
- Describe whether the crash happens on launch or only after a particular source, scene, game, or action is involved.
- List recent changes and the controlled tests you have already tried, including whether Safe Mode changed the symptom.
Those details make it possible to investigate a particular crash rather than guess from a list of possible causes.
