Match the output to the frame rate at which the video was recorded, when that rate is known—not to an arbitrary default such as 30 fps or to a number inferred from a YouTube playlist. First inspect the actual source file and its timestamps. If you truly need a different constant frame rate, use FFmpeg’s fps filter and verify the resulting motion and duration.

What frame rate should you use?

YouTube recommends encoding and uploading recorded content at the frame rate used during recording. Common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps; other rates are accepted too. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also lists 23.98, 29.97 and 59.94 fps as less common examples. These are examples, not a requirement to convert every video to one of those values. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings and its upload troubleshooting guidance.

A playlist listing does not establish the original recording cadence. A video served by YouTube may have been transcoded, so inspect the source file or production master you intend to process. When the known recording rate and the file’s timestamp behavior differ, do not assume that a single metadata number resolves the discrepancy.

Inspect the source with ffprobe

Run this against the actual source file:

ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=avg_frame_rate,r_frame_rate -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4

The output can include both avg_frame_rate and r_frame_rate. They are reported stream values, not interchangeable guarantees of the camera’s original capture rate. Variable-frame-rate footage can have changing presentation timestamps, and container or stream metadata may not tell the whole story. If the values disagree, consider the source’s recording context and timestamp behavior rather than choosing one blindly.

Decide whether to convert at all

If the file already has the intended cadence and your edit preserves its timestamps, avoid unnecessary frame-rate conversion. Re-encoding solely to force a familiar number may change temporal sampling without improving the video.

Conversion is appropriate when a project or delivery workflow genuinely requires a particular constant cadence. Changing cadence means some input frames may be duplicated or dropped; the result can look juddery or show repeated motion, depending on the content and the relationship between the input and output rates.

Convert to a constant rate with the fps filter

For example, to create constant-rate output at 30000/1001 fps:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=30000/1001" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a copy output.mp4

Replace 30000/1001 with the measured or deliberately chosen rational rate. This is an illustrative command, not a universal encoding recipe: the video codec, quality settings and audio handling depend on the project and the source streams. The fps filter uses presentation timestamps to produce a constant frame rate by copying, duplicating or dropping frames and creating new output timestamps. Its behavior is documented in the FFmpeg fps filter documentation.

When to use -r—and when not to

The output -r option does not mean the same thing in every mode. During video encoding, it can duplicate or drop frames to achieve the requested constant output rate. During streamcopy, it signals a frame rate to the muxer without changing the frame data. If that signaled rate does not match the rate implied by the packet timestamps, the resulting file may be invalid. The FFmpeg documentation change describing -r distinguishes these cases.

Task What the setting does Practical choice
Encode at a new constant cadence Output -r can cause frames to be duplicated or dropped. Use the fps filter when you want an explicit timestamp-based conversion.
Streamcopy without re-encoding Output -r signals a rate to the muxer; it does not alter frame data. Do not use it as a generic metadata correction. Ensure the signaled rate is consistent with the timestamps.
Preserve the source cadence No conversion is needed if the source and edit already meet the delivery requirement. Avoid forcing a different rate merely because it is common.

Verify the exported file

  1. Run the same ffprobe command on output.mp4 and check the reported average and nominal rates.
  2. Inspect the beginning and end of the video, as well as sections with fast or regular motion, for judder or visibly repeated frames.
  3. Check that duration and audio remain coherent. A frame-rate conversion changes frame sampling; do not treat a reported rate alone as proof that motion and timestamps are correct.
