Then check that your bitrate fits your codec, resolution, frame rate, and sustained upload capacity. If viewers still buffer while OBS shows a stable connection, investigate YouTube playback latency and viewer conditions rather than assuming VBR is the cause.
Why is my YouTube stream buffering after I changed OBS from CBR to VBR?
“Buffering” can describe two different problems:
- OBS-to-YouTube trouble: OBS shows rising dropped frames or disconnects while sending the stream. The broadcaster may see interruptions, and YouTube’s stream health may flag an ingest problem.
- Viewer playback trouble: OBS remains connected, but viewers see playback pause or buffer after YouTube receives the stream.
Changing to VBR is a reasonable reason to revisit your settings, because YouTube’s live encoder instructions specify CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. That does not, by itself, prove VBR caused either kind of buffering. Use OBS’s connection indicators and YouTube’s stream health to identify which side is failing.
Do not confuse YouTube’s VBR recommendations for uploaded video files with its live-stream encoder guidance. Uploading a finished video and sending a live RTMP/RTMPS stream are separate workflows.

Should OBS use CBR or VBR for YouTube live streaming?
For a YouTube live stream using RTMP/RTMPS, set the streaming encoder’s rate control to CBR, as specified in YouTube’s live encoder settings. In OBS, open Settings > Output, select the Streaming output section, and set Rate Control to CBR. OBS labels and layout can vary by version and selected output mode.
Confirm the bitrate as well as the rate-control mode. A CBR setting cannot compensate for a bitrate that exceeds what your connection can sustain. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Choose a bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate
Use the row matching your live stream’s codec, ingest resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain them.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These recommendations are from YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026. If you stream with AV1 or H.265, consult the corresponding codec rows in YouTube’s table rather than using the H.264 figures above.

Make sure your upload connection has headroom
YouTube recommends roughly 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. For example, a 17 Mbps stream needs about 20.4 Mbps of sustained upload capacity to leave that margin. Treat this as a planning target, not a guarantee: other devices, competing traffic, interruptions, and a backup stream can reduce the capacity available to OBS. Test upload performance, not just download speed, and assess it under conditions similar to your broadcast.
How to fix dropped frames or disconnections in OBS
- Restore CBR and confirm the bitrate. In OBS, go to Settings > Output > Streaming. Choose CBR for Rate Control, then check the configured bitrate against YouTube’s matching codec, resolution, and frame-rate recommendation.
- Check available upload capacity. Verify that sustained upload can carry the stream with about 20% headroom. Account for other people and devices using the connection, plus any second stream.
- Watch OBS Stats while streaming. Look at the dropped-frame counter and connection state. OBS explains that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Rising network drops point to a connection or capacity issue; they do not prove rate control alone is responsible.
- If network drops continue, lower the bitrate and reassess. Reduce it to a level your connection can sustain, then check whether the dropped-frame rate settles and YouTube stream health improves.
- Test a wired connection if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS identifies Wi-Fi as a potential source of instability and recommends wired networking where practical. Ethernet is a useful diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check other network causes. OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization software, outdated drivers, and router or modem problems among possibilities. Change one relevant factor at a time and see whether the connection stabilizes.
- Rehearse and monitor YouTube stream health. Before an important event, test with motion and audio similar to the planned stream. During the broadcast, compare YouTube’s stream-health messages with OBS’s connection indicators.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If OBS instead indicates rendering or encoding lag, that is a different problem from network packet loss; use the relevant OBS Stats and log details before changing network settings.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
What if OBS is stable but viewers still see buffering?
If OBS reports a stable connection and YouTube’s stream health does not indicate an ingest problem, look at playback rather than assuming your encoder rate control is at fault. YouTube notes that lower stream latency can increase playback buffering. Check the stream’s latency setting and note whether the reports come from particular viewers, devices, playback qualities, or network conditions. Without those details, the cause cannot be pinned on VBR or a single encoder setting.
Keep the two diagnostic paths separate: OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health help assess delivery to YouTube; latency settings and reports across viewers and devices help investigate playback after ingest.
