Reseat both ends, inspect the cable, and substitute a known-good cable; if the problem remains, check the router port, upload capacity, shared network load, and encoder. YouTube recommends a wired connection for computer livestreaming and says a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
How to tell whether the Ethernet cable is causing dropouts
Separate the possible failure points before replacing parts. A dropout might be a lost wired network link, an encoder that stops sending, a YouTube stream-health warning, or playback trouble affecting viewers. Note when it happens and record any warning from the computer, router or switch, encoder, or YouTube Live Control Room.
- Reseat the cable. Check that the plugs are fully inserted at both the computer and the router or switch.
- Inspect the cable and connectors. Look for visible damage, sharp kinks, or a broken or loose retention clip. These are practical checks, not a checklist prescribed by YouTube.
- Substitute a known-good cable. Use a cable with connectors compatible with your equipment and long enough to reach without strain. If the wired link and stream stabilize, the original cable is a strong suspect; replace it. If they do not, continue diagnosing rather than buying cables repeatedly.
- Check the other end of the wired path. If available and appropriate, try another router or switch port. This can help distinguish a cable problem from a port fault.
YouTube recommends using an Ethernet cable when livestreaming from a computer. Its filming tips for livestreaming also caution that a shared high-speed connection may limit an individual user’s outbound capacity.
Check YouTube’s stream health and the encoder
While streaming, review the preview, stream-health status, and any encoder errors in YouTube Live Control Room. Compare the encoder preview with what viewers report: if it looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, YouTube says there may be an outbound-connection issue. Test the outbound connection, and contact your ISP if you find a connection problem. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Consider how widely the playback problem is reported. A report from one viewer points more toward that viewer’s device or connection; reports from multiple viewers on different connections can indicate an encoder issue. Do not diagnose from one report alone. Also check whether the computer is under heavy CPU load or the encoder is reporting errors.
Check upload capacity against your stream bitrate
A download-speed result does not establish that your connection can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate. Run an internet speed test that reports upload speed, ideally under conditions similar to the stream: same wired setup, time of day, and household or venue network activity. Busy shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream.

YouTube says the total bitrate of the stream must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Include a backup stream’s bitrate, if you use one, when adding up the encoder’s outbound demand. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee against network variation. These are YouTube-published encoder bitrate recommendations, not minimum internet-plan speeds. Match the row to the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually configured in your encoder, then allow upload headroom and account for other network traffic. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance is subject to change.

If the stream still drops, isolate the remaining causes
- The cable substitution helped: replace the suspect cable with a compatible cable of suitable length.
- The problem changes when you switch router or switch ports: investigate the original port or network equipment rather than assuming the cable was responsible.
- Upload capacity is below the stream’s total bitrate or varies under shared load: reduce competing network use or adjust the encoder’s bitrate, then test again. If outbound connectivity remains problematic, ask your ISP to investigate the connection.
- The encoder preview or error messages indicate trouble: check encoder settings and computer CPU load; viewer reports across different connections can also help distinguish an encoder problem.
- Only one viewer reports a problem: have that viewer check their own device and connection before changing your stream setup.
Before the next public event, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the test; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring as part of its encoder guidance.
Choose a replacement or diagnostic tool carefully
If substituting a known-good cable stabilizes the connection, use a compatible Ethernet patch cable that fits the ports and reaches without strain. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a required cable category, brand, length, or model. A more expensive or higher-category cable will not fix ISP instability, congestion on a shared network, a faulty port, or encoder overload.

A basic RJ45 Ethernet cable tester may help identify some cable faults, but it is optional and is not specifically recommended by YouTube. It does not replace checking real outbound connectivity and stream health.
