For a playlist download, yt-dlp can continue to the next video after an item fails: its current README documents --no-abort-on-error for that purpose and describes it as the default. That option does not guarantee that FFmpeg stays running or that a YouTube live connection remains uninterrupted. Handle playlist traversal with yt-dlp or a wrapper; use FFmpeg for media input, processing, and output, and test the complete workflow against the failure you expect.
First, identify what needs to stay alive
“Keep the stream alive” can mean three different things, and they need different handling:
- The playlist job: after an unavailable or failed item, the process moves on to later playlist entries.
- The FFmpeg process: the encoder does not exit when a particular input fails or ends.
- The publishing connection: the live output connection to YouTube remains open and viewers do not see an interruption.
yt-dlp’s playlist continuation option addresses the first case. It is not an end-to-end guarantee for the other two. A skipped item can let a job proceed while FFmpeg exits, or while the publishing connection drops.
For a playlist download, let yt-dlp continue
The yt-dlp README documents --no-abort-on-error as continuing with the next video on download errors, including to skip unavailable playlist videos, and lists it as the default. If your installed version and configuration use that behavior, an unavailable entry should not necessarily end the playlist download. You can also set the option explicitly so the intended behavior is visible in the command:

yt-dlp --no-abort-on-error "PLAYLIST_URL"
Replace PLAYLIST_URL with the actual playlist URL. This is a download-queue example, not a command for publishing a continuous FFmpeg live stream. Check the output log: confirm yt-dlp reports the failed entry and then attempts later entries. The documentation describes the option’s intended scope; it does not establish that every failure type will be recovered.
Distinguish continuation from ignoring errors
--no-abort-on-error is documented specifically as continuing with the next video after a download error. --ignore-errors has a separate description covering download and postprocessing errors. These options are not interchangeable guarantees for a separate FFmpeg process or a live destination. Choose based on the error scope you need rather than adding both automatically. Consult the yt-dlp usage and options documentation for the behavior in your installed release.

Check that yt-dlp is actually traversing the playlist
A URL may refer to one video even when it appears in a playlist context, and yt-dlp has playlist selection controls that can change which entries are processed. Verify the command is receiving the playlist you intend and that selection options or configuration are not limiting it to a single item. If you expect it to continue but it stops, record the installed yt-dlp version and inspect the loaded configuration for an override.
The project FAQ recommends current-version diagnostics when investigating reproducible problems. Its guidance is available in the yt-dlp FAQ. Version and configuration matter: do not assume a behavior observed in another installation applies to yours.

Why the playlist option cannot keep FFmpeg or YouTube live by itself
FFmpeg reads inputs named with -i and writes to specified outputs. Its command-line documentation says options generally apply to the next specified file, so option ordering matters. FFmpeg does not become a fault-tolerant YouTube playlist queue merely because it is connected to yt-dlp. Playlist enumeration and skip behavior belong to yt-dlp or an orchestration wrapper; media processing, encoding, and output belong to FFmpeg. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
yt-dlp documents streaming a single video to a player through standard output with -o -. That example does not establish seamless output for a sequence of videos that may have different formats, codecs, durations, or failures. A playlist continuation flag cannot itself resolve those transitions or promise that a publishing connection stays open.

For live output, supervise each playlist item
If your requirement is a long-lived encoder and publishing connection, treat playlist traversal and the live output as separate parts of the system. A wrapper can resolve playlist entries one at a time, provide a valid input to FFmpeg, detect an item-level failure, and then decide whether to move on, retry, or restart. That is an engineering pattern based on the tools’ documented boundaries, not a universal tested command recipe.
- Resolve and verify an item. Have the playlist-handling layer identify the next entry and confirm it can provide the media input your FFmpeg command expects.
- Define the failure policy. Decide which errors should cause a retry, which should skip to the next item, and how many repeated failures should stop the job. yt-dlp also documents a threshold that can skip the rest of a playlist after a number of failures; that traversal control does not reconnect FFmpeg or YouTube.
- Keep output behavior explicit. Decide whether FFmpeg should consume successive inputs through a managed input mechanism or be restarted by the wrapper. In either case, define how the publishing connection is maintained and what viewers see during a transition.
- Validate media transitions. Check that the items can be handled by the same encoding and output path. Different formats, codecs, missing streams, or incompatible timestamps can make a transition fail even if playlist traversal succeeds.
- Test against the actual destination. Reproduce a representative unavailable item and a representative FFmpeg or network failure. Verify the log, FFmpeg process, publishing connection, and viewer playback separately.
There is no single option in the cited documentation that guarantees zero interruption across playlist selection, item retrieval, encoding, and live delivery. If uninterrupted viewer playback is essential, the transition, timestamp continuity, stream/container compatibility, and destination behavior all need to be tested in the real setup.

Troubleshoot the failure at the layer where it occurs
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| The job stops at an unavailable playlist entry. | Playlist traversal, yt-dlp version, or configuration. | Confirm the input is the playlist, inspect configuration and selection controls, and use or explicitly set --no-abort-on-error. Check whether later entries are attempted in the log. |
| yt-dlp moves on, but FFmpeg exits. | Input handoff or wrapper supervision. | Check how the next item reaches FFmpeg and whether the wrapper detects the failure and applies its retry, skip, or restart policy. |
| FFmpeg remains running, but the live output disconnects. | Publishing connection or destination behavior. | Inspect FFmpeg’s output and network errors, then test the actual destination’s reconnection behavior. Playlist continuation does not reconnect the output. |
| The next item starts, but playback or encoding fails. | Format, codec, stream, or timestamp compatibility. | Compare the failed and following inputs and verify that the chosen FFmpeg processing path can handle both. A skipped playlist error does not normalize media differences. |
| Only some entries are processed. | Playlist selection or failure threshold. | Review selection options and any configured failure threshold; yt-dlp documents controls that can stop traversal after repeated failures. |
| A transient network or fragment error is treated like a missing video. | Failure classification and retry policy. | Inspect the specific log message and decide whether that class should be retried rather than skipped. Do not assume a playlist-level continuation switch repairs every transient failure. |

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg playlist-recovery recipe: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
