To keep a Hindi video stream running around the clock without pushing unnecessarily large files or a high-bitrate live feed, separate two jobs: encode files before uploading them, and encode the live stream sent to YouTube. YouTube gives different recommendations for each. For a bandwidth-constrained H.264 live stream, test 480p30 or 720p30 against your actual footage; for prerecorded uploads, use YouTube’s upload settings and choose a quality level by inspecting a sample rather than expecting a guaranteed file-size reduction.
First decide what you need to make smaller
“Large uploads” can mean either a large prerecorded file sent to YouTube once or a high data rate continuously sent by a live encoder. The first affects upload time and storage; the second affects the internet connection needed while streaming. They are separate encoding decisions, and YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendations should not be copied into a live encoder configuration.
- Reducing the original file: Re-encode the video before uploading. A lower bitrate usually reduces file size, but can also remove image detail.
- Reducing live bandwidth: Set the live encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values your sustained connection can support.
Hindi itself does not call for a distinct bitrate in YouTube’s cited guidance. Instead, test the characteristics of your material: Devanagari text, fine patterns, movement, and speech or music can reveal quality loss that a static image will not.
Choose live settings for a continuous stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingest, with RTMP or RTMPS transport. For the practical H.264 starting points below, the minimum is not a promise of acceptable picture quality; the recommended rate is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee for every source or connection. For Hindi videos, look closely at text overlays, subtitles, faces, detailed backgrounds, and fast movement. A lower resolution may make small lettering harder to read even if the stream remains stable. Start with the source’s native frame rate where practical; encoding at a higher frame rate or resolution without a reason can increase the data rate without improving the result.
Set the encoder’s rate control and keyframes
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends for live ingest.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Select AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS as listed in YouTube’s guidance; listen for intelligible speech and clean music in a test.
- Prefer RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.
- Configure the encoder to match the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate selected for the stream in YouTube Studio.
Test against your actual connection and content
- Prepare a short sample with representative speech or music, motion, detailed backgrounds, and any Devanagari text used in the full stream.
- Test 480p30 and 720p30 if bandwidth is limited. Inspect the result on a typical viewing screen rather than judging only the encoder preview.
- Measure whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate over time, not just in a brief speed test. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other household or office traffic.
- Start a private or otherwise controlled test stream using YouTube Studio’s stream setup, then check stream health and audio before relying on the configuration continuously.
- If Live Control Room reports inadequate bandwidth or an incorrect bitrate, lower resolution or correct the encoder configuration to match the selected ingest settings. YouTube’s live streaming error-message guide explains common alerts.
Encode prerecorded files without uploading unnecessary data
If the Hindi videos will be uploaded first and then played as prerecorded content, use the upload workflow—not the live ingest table. YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, a frame rate matching the source, and BT.709 for SDR uploads. Its recommended SDR video bitrates are:

These figures are recommendations for uploaded files, not live-stream settings. Details and further format guidance are in YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Use a sample encode instead of guessing a quality slider
- Keep an untouched copy of the source file so you can compare or re-encode if needed.
- Choose the output resolution and frame rate based on the source and how viewers need to read text or see motion. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution recording.
- Encode a representative short section as MP4/H.264, progressive, with the source frame rate. For SDR, use BT.709.
- Compare the sample with the original on a normal viewing display. Check edges of Devanagari characters, subtitles, faces, motion, and audio synchronization.
- If the sample has visible blocking, smearing, or unreadable text, raise the quality/bitrate or use a higher resolution. If it looks sound, use that tested setting for the full file.
YouTube’s cited upload guidance does not prescribe a universal encoder quality-slider value, a target file size, or a compression ratio. The best result depends on the source, encoder, resolution, and the detail your viewers need to see.

Plan the 24/7 workflow, not just the encoding
Encoding settings cannot by themselves make a stream continuous. A local encoder needs its computer, power, network connection, and playback loop to keep working; recovery after a disconnect depends on the setup. Before scheduling a long run, confirm the playlist repeats, prevent the computer from sleeping or restarting unexpectedly, and decide how you will notice and respond to a dropped connection.
In YouTube Studio, review the stream’s configuration and privacy or scheduling choices before going live. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers those controls. Use only videos, music, and other material you have the rights to stream; encoding does not grant permission to use someone else’s work.

If you stream across multiple platforms, YouTube’s separate multi-platform guide recommends upload capacity of 1.5–2 times the combined target bitrate for that multi-stream context. That figure is not a general single-platform rule. See YouTube’s guide to streaming across platforms.
Common problems and what to check
