In a small room, careful placement can make the equipment you already own work better without crowding your desk or blocking a walkway.
Plan the layout before adding equipment
Measure the desk and the space around it, then decide where you will sit and where the camera will point. Keep a clear route through the room: stands, chairs, cables, and open drawers should not obstruct it. A 120 cm desk is one example of a compact setup, not a universal minimum; check your own desk depth and available floor space before choosing gear. SetupHQ’s small-room guide recommends prioritizing placement and checking fit rather than assuming that a larger or more elaborate setup is necessary.
Check fit and connections
- Measure the usable desk surface, including space needed for your keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
- Check how a camera or light attaches: a clamp or monitor mount must fit the actual edge, thickness, and shape.
- Confirm the devices can connect to your computer and that cables can reach without crossing the walking route.
- Use what you already have if it fits the layout; consider new equipment only after you know what is missing.
Position the webcam and frame the shot
Place the webcam where it captures your face without taking up valuable desk area or forcing you to look far away from the screen. Attach it to the monitor if its mount fits, or use a stable surface that keeps the camera in the intended position. Before adjusting the scene, sit where you will stream and check what appears behind you and whether the frame includes the area you want.

- Resize and position the camera image in the preview. Keep it from covering important game, presentation, or other on-screen content.
- Check the frame from your normal seated position, then adjust the camera or scene layout until it feels natural.

Make room for the microphone and balance audio
Choose a microphone position that leaves room for normal desk work and does not force you to lean away from it. If you already own a mount, check that it can attach securely without extending into the walkway or colliding with the monitor. Keep the microphone close enough to pick up your voice clearly, then listen to a test recording or preview.
In OBS, use the audio mixer to balance your microphone against desktop or game audio so your voice remains audible. Light your face without using floor space
A light in front of you can illuminate your face. Where a floor stand would get in the way, a monitor-mounted light is one possible space-saving option. Check that its mount fits both your monitor and desk, and position it so it illuminates you from the front without obstructing the screen or camera. A mounted light is a placement option, not a requirement; the available guidance does not establish that one light type or model is best for every room. StudioKitGuide’s small-office lighting guide names the Elgato Key Light Neo, but that recommendation is not an independent comparison, and fit, current availability, and price should be checked before purchase.
Test the whole setup in the room
- Sit in your streaming position and confirm that the webcam framing is right.
- Check that the light illuminates your face and that its mount is secure.
- Listen to a test with your microphone and desktop or game audio together.
- Move the chair and open any drawers you use; make sure the route through the room stays clear.
- Check that cables reach safely and do not create a trip hazard.
If something does not fit, change the position before buying a replacement. A camera or light that clips to a compatible monitor may save desk or floor space, while a stand or arm is only useful if it can be placed securely without obstructing movement.
