There is no published maximum local-file size for playing a pre-recorded video in OBS and sending it to YouTube Live. OBS reads and decodes the file on your computer; YouTube receives the encoded live stream. In practice, the limits are your computer’s storage and ability to play the file, the stream’s duration, and your upload connection—not a YouTube source-file allowance.

Why the source file has no stated YouTube Live size limit

When you add a video as an OBS Media Source, the file stays on your computer. OBS plays it and encodes the program for live delivery; YouTube receives that outgoing stream, not the original file. This means the source file’s size is not the same as the live stream’s bitrate or data sent to YouTube. This distinction follows from the documented workflow; it is not an explicit YouTube guarantee. OBS Media Sources and YouTube’s live encoder guidance describe the separate source-playback and live-ingest roles.

The OBS Media Source documentation lists local formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and describes playback controls such as looping. It does not specify a maximum file size or duration. A very large file can still be impractical if the computer lacks free storage, cannot read it reliably, or cannot decode its video smoothly.

What determines whether a large file will work

Storage and playback

  • Keep the full source file on a drive with enough free space and dependable read performance for the entire broadcast.
  • Check that OBS can open and play the file before going live. Confirm that the picture and sound remain synchronized and that playback does not stall.
  • Choose looping or other playback behavior in the Media Source properties if the video should repeat; the source file’s size does not itself determine whether it loops.

Outgoing stream settings and upload capacity

The live bitrate describes the encoded stream OBS sends, not the size of the local recording. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 bitrates of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS. Set OBS to match the chosen output and the applicable YouTube guidance; don’t increase the source file size expecting it to improve the live stream.

Your connection needs stable upload capacity above the configured stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% headroom beyond that bitrate and note that other users or devices sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to OBS. As YouTube puts it: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Check YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips before broadcasting.

File size, stream duration, and YouTube archives are different limits

A larger source file often means a longer video, but YouTube’s archive guidance is about the live broadcast duration, not the size of the file in OBS. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not treat the 12-hour guidance as a source-file cap or rely on an automatic archive for a longer broadcast. YouTube’s archive live streams guidance explains the distinction.

Uploading a finished video through YouTube Studio is a separate workflow. YouTube publishes encoding recommendations for direct video uploads, but those recommendations do not establish a maximum file size for an OBS-to-Live source file. See YouTube recommended upload encoding settings for the direct-upload case.

Prepare and test before going live

  1. Confirm live eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started requirements.
  2. Add and test the source. In OBS, add the video as a Media Source, select the local file, and set its playback behavior. Start playback in OBS and check image, sound, and continuity.
  3. Set the outgoing stream. Configure OBS’s encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for YouTube’s applicable live guidance. These settings govern the encoded stream, not the original file’s size.
  4. Check upload capacity and stream health. Test the connection, allow the recommended upload headroom, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during a test and the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before starting.
  5. Check any local recording separately. If you are also recording locally, verify the recording is intact and that its file size is growing; that is a separate check from YouTube receiving the live stream.

Common problems with large OBS source files

  • OBS cannot open the video: Confirm that the file uses a format supported by Media Source and that the path points to the correct local file. Test another supported file if necessary.
  • Playback stutters or freezes: The computer may be struggling to read or decode the source. Test playback before going live and reduce competing disk or processing work; the stream bitrate alone does not solve a source-playback problem.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the outgoing bitrate against available upload capacity, account for the recommended 20% headroom, and consider other traffic on the shared network.
  • The live archive is missing or incomplete: Check broadcast duration. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an automatic archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded video live on YouTube without leaving your computer running, StreamNeo handles playback in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and streams to YouTube.
