AMD AMF can encode the video feed for a YouTube live stream, but it does not select or schedule library files, create a continuous program, or broadcast to YouTube by itself. To stream prerecorded videos, use playback or playout software to arrange and play the files, connect its output to an encoder that supports AMF, then send that encoded feed to YouTube using YouTube’s live-ingest settings.

What AMD AMF does—and what it does not do

AMD describes AMF as a framework for accessing AMD GPU multimedia capabilities, including encoding, decoding, conversion, processing, and scaling. AMD GPUOpen’s AMF SDK page says: “The AMD Advanced Media Framework (AMF) SDK provides developers with optimal access to AMD GPUs for multimedia processing.” That defines the framework; it does not establish a particular card’s speed or picture quality in a given application. AMD GPUOpen: AMF SDK

AMF is one component in a larger workflow. You need separate software to choose the library files and their order, play them continuously, and deliver that output to an encoder. The encoder then connects to YouTube. AMF itself is not a playlist manager, scheduler, or live-streaming service.

The AMD and YouTube documentation cited here does not give a turnkey playlist-to-live setup or an AMF-specific command line. Menus, routing options, and exposed encoder settings depend on the playback and encoding applications you choose; verify them in those applications’ current documentation rather than assuming one universal recipe.

Choose between streaming a library and uploading finished videos

If viewers should see the videos as a live program, use playback or playout software to run the files in sequence and send a continuous feed to a live encoder. The encoder’s job is to encode that feed and transmit it to YouTube.

If you simply want videos available on your channel for on-demand viewing, encode and upload them as files instead. YouTube’s upload guidance discusses file settings such as an MP4 container and variable bitrate. Those are for uploaded files, not a substitute for YouTube’s live-ingest requirements, which call for constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube Help: upload encoding settings

Build the prerecorded-video-to-live workflow

  1. Prepare the library. Confirm that the files play correctly, identify their order, and decide how the program should behave when it reaches the end of the list. The playback or playout application—not AMF—controls that sequence and whether playback continues.
  2. Select playout and encoder software. Choose software that can play the files continuously and route its output to a live encoder with an AMD AMF option. Check the software’s current documentation for playlist behavior, output routing, and supported AMF codecs. Availability may vary by GPU, operating system, driver, and application.
  3. Connect the program to the encoder. Configure the chosen application to provide the continuous video and audio output the encoder expects. The connection method and exact controls are application-specific; the official AMF and YouTube pages do not prescribe them.
  4. Set the live encoding format. Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and color settings supported by both the encoder and YouTube. Use CBR for the live feed and match bitrate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  5. Set up YouTube ingest. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and key for the encoder. YouTube ordinarily detects resolution and frame rate automatically; a custom stream key lets you select settings manually. Enter the key only in the intended encoder and keep it private. See YouTube Help: manage live stream settings.
  6. Test, then monitor. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the intended stream. Check both audio and moving video, confirm that the encoder is sending the expected settings, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event.

Set the encoder to YouTube’s live-ingest requirements

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS transport, H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and CBR. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use only a codec that the particular GPU, driver, and encoder application actually expose; the presence of a codec on YouTube’s list does not mean every AMF setup supports it. Bitrate examples

The following are examples from YouTube’s current live settings table. YouTube’s page does not state a publication year for these figures; they are published recommendations, not measurements of a specific AMF encoder or internet connection. Check the live table again when configuring a stream because recommendations can change.

Codec Resolution and frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

Choose the row that matches the actual ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. Your upload connection must sustain the stream bitrate reliably; test the connection and the complete stream path rather than assuming a nominal internet-plan speed is sufficient. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if the connection or encoder cannot maintain it.

Keyframes, color, and HDR

  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds. Set the interval in the encoder if the application exposes that control.
  • SDR: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit video for standard dynamic range.
  • HDR: YouTube’s guidance recommends H.265 and 10-bit for HDR. Confirm that the exact GPU, driver, encoder application, and chosen settings support the desired HDR path; do not infer HDR capability from AMF alone.
  • Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key supplied through YouTube’s live setup.

Check GPU, software, and driver compatibility

Do not assume every AMD GPU or application offers the same AMF options. Before committing to a workflow, check the exact GPU, operating system, installed driver, encoder application, and codec combination. Confirm that AMF appears as an available encoder and that its output can be routed to the selected playout feed.

AMD’s AMF page currently lists AMF SDK v1.5.3 and says it requires AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 or newer. These are version details reported by AMD’s page checked on October 3, 2026, and may change; consult the page for current requirements: AMD GPUOpen: AMF SDK. A listed SDK requirement is not, by itself, a guarantee that a particular application exposes every AMF feature.

  • The playlist stops or does not advance: Check the playout software’s playlist and end-of-list behavior. AMF encodes the feed; it does not manage file order or schedule playback.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before scheduling prerecorded material as a live program, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video and audio track. A library that can be played and encoded is not automatically cleared for live distribution. Review YouTube’s current rules and any applicable rights or licensing terms for the material; technical compliance with ingest settings does not establish permission to broadcast it.
