The cause depends on where the playlist runs. If OBS is playing local files through its VLC Video source, check VLC installation, playlist settings, and the affected file. If OBS is showing a YouTube playlist embedded in a browser source, check whether the missing video can be embedded, is age-restricted, or is private. First ask: does the skip also appear in the OBS preview or a local recording, or only in YouTube’s live playback?
First find out where the skip happens
“YouTube live playlist” can mean two different setups: OBS playing a playlist of local media files, or OBS displaying a YouTube playlist embedded in a browser source while streaming. They have different causes and fixes.
- Check the OBS preview. If the item is missing there, investigate the source or file in OBS.
- Check a local recording. If it also skips in the recording, the issue is likely in the playback path before the stream reaches YouTube.
- Compare YouTube playback. If OBS preview and recording are continuous but viewers see a skip or stall, check the event in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream quality and event accessibility. YouTube recommends monitoring the event and notes that network congestion can affect live playback. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and troubleshooting steps.
If OBS is playing local files with VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source is designed to play multiple media items as a playlist. It requires VLC to be installed; for 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC. The source also offers playlist, visibility, caching, audio-track, and subtitle controls. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Check VLC and the playlist settings
- Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select the VLC Video source and open its properties. Confirm the affected file is in the playlist and inspect its position and the source’s playback options.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. When enabled, the source can play items in a randomized order rather than the listed order.
- Check Loop Playlist if you expect playback to repeat after reaching the end. OBS documents it as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; these defaults do not establish the cause of a particular skip.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. It controls what playback does while the source is hidden, so a scene change or source visibility change may affect what you see.
- For network media, note the source’s network caching setting. OBS documents a 400 ms default; that is a setting value, not evidence that caching causes skipped items.
Test a file that skips
If only one local file is affected, compare its extension and playback with a file that works. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. A listed extension alone does not prove that a particular file is healthy or correctly encoded. Check the OBS log for source errors and, if possible, test the file outside OBS. Without the file details or log, it is not possible to identify a specific codec or media defect.

If OBS is displaying an embedded YouTube playlist
A video that plays on YouTube’s site may still be unavailable inside an embedded playlist. YouTube Help identifies videos with embedding disabled by the uploader and age-restricted videos as possible exclusions; private videos also will not be available unless shared with the viewer. Check the affected item’s visibility and sharing settings, and whether embedding is permitted. YouTube recommends using public videos with embedding enabled for embedded playlists. Separate file skips from audio timing problems
Audio that starts late or cuts off briefly is not necessarily the same problem as an entire playlist item being skipped. OBS issue reports describe specific symptoms: one report concerned roughly one second missing at the start and end of MP3 files in a VLC playlist, while another concerned delayed audio monitoring. The latter issue page says a project member confirmed the delay was limited to monitoring, with recordings capturing playback correctly; it was closed as completed in July 2023. These reports are examples, not diagnoses for other systems: the MP3 playlist report and the VLC Media Source Lag report.
