You can use FFmpeg and a mini PC’s supported hardware encoder—such as Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV)—to send a looping video to YouTube Live. First confirm that the exact processor, drivers, and FFmpeg build support the codec you plan to use. Then match YouTube’s current ingest settings, leave upload headroom, and test recovery after failures; neither FFmpeg nor YouTube guarantees that a particular mini PC will run continuously without interruption.
What you need to verify before encoding
Hardware encoding reduces the work done by the CPU, but “Intel mini PC” does not automatically mean that every QSV codec or mode is available. Support depends on the processor, operating-system driver, and installed FFmpeg build. Confirm the actual encoder is exposed on your machine and test it with the format you intend to stream.
- Media: Identify the file’s video codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether it contains audio. Decide how the file will repeat; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe an FFmpeg looping command.
- Encoder: Check your installed FFmpeg build and platform for the QSV encoder corresponding to your chosen output codec. Do not infer support from the processor brand alone.
- Network: Measure reliable upload capacity under realistic conditions. The stream’s total bitrate must fit the connection, with additional headroom.
- Operations: Decide how your operating system will restart FFmpeg after a process exit or machine reboot. Service-manager and watchdog settings vary by OS and need to be tested on the target system.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you select; the figures are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular mini PC supports a codec or that a network can sustain the stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance
| Setting | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to encoder and platform support. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR is recommended. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3. If the source has no audio, verify the output and YouTube’s handling in a test stream. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps; choose a rate the source, encoder, and connection can sustain. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
Bitrate examples and upload headroom
In YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026, the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30 is 14 Mbps; for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30, it is 10 Mbps. These examples apply to those specific codec and resolution/frame-rate combinations. Check the current table for other combinations. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom, so a stream using 14 Mbps needs a connection capable of at least 16.8 Mbps of sustained upload under the conditions in which it will run. Account for total stream bitrate and network variation rather than relying on a best-case speed test. YouTube streaming tips

Configure QSV without assuming it will accelerate every stage
FFmpeg documents QSV as Intel Quick Sync Video hardware acceleration. For its QSV transcoding path, FFmpeg says both decoder and encoder must support QSV acceleration and that no filters may be used in that path. This matters if you need scaling, overlays, or other processing: do not assume hardware decode, filtering, and encoding will all remain accelerated together. Verify the pipeline for your FFmpeg version and device. FFmpeg documentation
FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes the QSV low_power option as intended to reduce power consumption and GPU usage. That is the option’s stated intent, not a measured saving or guarantee for your mini PC. Encoder options vary with platform, driver, codec, and FFmpeg build; consult the installed encoder’s help and run a representative test. FFmpeg codecs documentation

Set up and test the 24/7 workflow
- Inspect the source. Record its codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format. Decide whether the output should preserve those properties or use a different YouTube-compatible profile.
- Confirm the hardware path. Check that the installed FFmpeg exposes the intended QSV encoder and that the processor and driver support the selected codec. Test whether your required processing can work with the chosen hardware path.
- Select output settings. Choose an ingest protocol, supported codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, two-second keyframes, and AAC or MP3 audio as appropriate. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table and leave its recommended 20% upload headroom.
- Protect the stream key. In YouTube Studio’s live stream settings, obtain the stream key and keep it private. Put it in a protected configuration or environment variable rather than a public command example, repository, screenshot, or log. YouTube says the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password. Reset it if compromised. Manage live stream settings
- Run a representative test. Before leaving the stream unattended, test with similar audio and video movement to the planned broadcast. Check playback and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring while live. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Validate unattended recovery. Test what happens when FFmpeg exits, the network drops, or the mini PC reboots or loses power. Configure your OS-specific service manager or recovery process only after confirming its behavior on the actual system. The cited YouTube and FFmpeg guidance does not define one universal restart policy.
Reliability checks and common failure causes
- QSV encoder is unavailable: The installed FFmpeg build, driver, processor, or codec may not support the requested path. Check the encoder exposed by that build and test a compatible codec rather than assuming support.
- Filtering breaks the accelerated path: FFmpeg’s documented QSV transcoding condition excludes filters in that path. If you need scaling, overlays, or other filters, validate a compatible pipeline and confirm actual behavior on the device.
- Stream health reports instability or the connection drops: The total bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the connection may be disrupted. Recheck the selected YouTube bitrate recommendation, leave 20% headroom, and test the network under realistic conditions. A disruption can break a stream.
- Stream stops after a process or power failure: Continuous operation depends on recovery behavior beyond encoding itself. Test process exit, network loss, reboot, and power interruption, then adjust the system-specific restart arrangement based on those results.
- Stream key is exposed: Treat it as compromised, reset it using YouTube’s live stream settings, and update the protected configuration used by the encoder.
Testing and monitoring reduce avoidable surprises, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. YouTube’s guidance recommends monitoring stream health and messages during a live event; continuous operation also depends on the mini PC, power, network, and tested recovery setup.
