Yes. A YouTube 24/7 playlist can use MP4 files at different resolutions if the playlist software can read them and send YouTube a stable live feed. YouTube transcodes the feed it receives for viewers; that does not guarantee that every playlist player can handle mixed-resolution clips correctly. Check your software’s scaling and output behavior, then test transitions before relying on the stream.
Why mixed-resolution source files and stream resolution are different
Your playlist’s MP4 files are the source material. The live encoder or playout software reads those files and sends one live feed to YouTube. That software must handle changes between clips—for example, moving from a 1080p file to a 720p file.
YouTube’s live guidance says it automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That happens after YouTube receives the feed; it does not establish whether a particular playlist player can decode, scale, or switch between mixed-resolution inputs cleanly. What to check in your playlist software
- Mixed-resolution support: Check the software’s current documentation or settings to see whether it accepts clips with different dimensions.
- Scaling behavior: Find out whether it scales each clip to a fixed live output resolution, preserves the source dimensions, or changes output settings at clip boundaries.
- Output controls: Confirm how to set the live feed’s resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; if you use a custom stream key with manual settings, make sure the actual feed matches them.
- Clip-boundary and file-error behavior: Check what happens when a clip ends, the next file has different dimensions, or a file cannot be read. YouTube’s transcoding cannot repair a broken or incompatible feed from the playlist software.
Choose a stable live output
Pick a target resolution and frame rate that suit your material and available upload connection. The target live feed does not have to match every source file’s resolution if your playout software can scale the clips appropriately.

These are recommendations for the live encoder feed, not requirements for the source MP4 files. Allow for connection variability rather than treating the listed bitrate as a guarantee of a stable broadcast. For 4K or another codec, consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the applicable recommendation.
Test before leaving the playlist on air
- Load the actual MP4 files into the playlist and set the live output resolution and frame rate you intend to use.
- Connect the intended YouTube stream key and start a private or otherwise suitable test stream.
- Watch transitions in both directions between the different resolutions. Check for blank frames, distortion, unexpected output changes, and interruptions.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test, and confirm that playback looks acceptable on the viewer side.
- If a transition fails, check the player’s mixed-resolution and scaling settings, then try converting the source clips to consistent dimensions or using a fixed output mode supported by that software.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A successful test is useful evidence for your chosen files and software, but it does not establish that every future file or configuration will behave the same way.

Upload bitrates are not live-playlist rules
For comparison, YouTube’s upload encoding guidance lists 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR uploads at standard frame rates and 5 Mbps for 720p SDR uploads at standard frame rates. Those values concern uploaded-video encoding. They do not specify the live ingest bitrate, nor do they require all files in a 24/7 playlist to have identical resolution.

You can use local playlist and encoder software, which requires a computer and connection to remain available, or a cloud playout service. In either case, check whether the specific tool accepts mixed-resolution sources, how it handles scaling and clip changes, and what it does when a file fails. YouTube lists Gyre as an example of a cloud-based tool for prerecorded 24/7 streams and describes its converter and Full HD/4K broadcast options; that is a vendor description, not an independent performance test.
