Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFirst check whether the black bars are part of the video image or empty space added by the player. If they are baked into the frames, crop or reframe the video in an editor, then inspect the result for content lost at the edges. If the bars are outside the image, changing the video may be unnecessary: YouTube adapts its player to different aspect ratios and advises creators not to add padding or black bars to the video itself.
Find out where the black bars come from
Pause on a representative frame and examine the boundary between the picture and the black area. Bars visible inside the video frame are embedded in the source; bars surrounding a smaller picture in the playback layout may be player padding. Only embedded bars can be removed by editing the file.
YouTube Help says, “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” (YouTube Help, “Video resolution & aspect ratios – Computer,” checked 2026-10-03.) Its player adapts to a video’s aspect ratio, so a different ratio does not by itself mean the video is defective.
Choose between cropping and preserving the whole image
For ordinary horizontal viewing on a computer, 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio, but YouTube supports other ratios. Decide based on the actual footage rather than forcing every source into 16:9.

- Crop or reframe: Use this when bars are embedded and filling the intended frame matters more than retaining every edge of the original picture. Cropping can remove subjects, captions, graphics, or other meaningful details.
- Keep the full frame: Use this when cropping would cut off important content or the original composition is intentional. The result may leave unused space in a different playback layout.
- Do not stretch: Stretching distorts the image and does not preserve the source’s intended proportions.
Crop or reframe the video before streaming
The exact controls depend on the editor; YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe an editing program or a specific crop procedure. Use your editor’s crop or reframing controls, and make the change only to the extent needed to exclude the embedded bars.
- Inspect the source: Pause on a representative frame and confirm that the bars are within the video image rather than around it in the player.
- Adjust the framing: Crop or reposition the image to remove embedded bars while keeping the important picture area in view. Avoid assuming that the center of the frame is always the right place to anchor the crop.
- Compare with the original: Check the edited frame against the uncropped source, especially around people, captions, titles, and graphics. If the crop removes meaningful content, retain the full image instead.
- Check the final output: Inspect the crop at the output size and preview more than one representative point in the video. Make sure the framing remains suitable throughout, not just on a single frame.
- Export for delivery: YouTube’s recommended upload settings include MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and the same frame rate as the recording. These are delivery recommendations, not steps that remove bars.
Check the live layout separately
YouTube’s Live Control Room supports dual horizontal and vertical live streams. The vertical stream defaults to a center crop of the horizontal stream; documented layout options include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. You can adjust the vertical layout, zoom, and position. These options affect the live vertical composition; they are not a general fix for black bars embedded in a prerecorded video.

Keep the two decisions separate: edit the source if its frames contain bars, and adjust the Live Control Room layout when choosing how a horizontal stream appears vertically.
Test the stream before leaving it running
Preview and monitor the actual live output before depending on it for a long stream. Check both picture and audio, confirm that the event is accessible as intended, and verify that local archive files are being written if archiving is part of your workflow. YouTube recommends preparing and testing in advance; its guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.

For encoder delivery, YouTube recommends leaving headroom in available upload bandwidth and testing the setup. Its live encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. These streaming settings do not change whether bars are embedded in the source.
Troubleshoot black bars in the finished stream
- The bars remain after editing: Check whether they were part of the source frame and whether the edited file was the one added to the stream. If the bars are outside the image in the playback layout, changing the file may not be the right fix.
- The crop cuts off a subject or caption: Reframe the image or keep the whole source frame. Review the entire clip, since important content may not stay centered throughout.
- The picture looks distorted: Undo any stretch or non-proportional scaling and preserve the original image proportions.
- The vertical live version has an unwanted composition: Adjust the Live Control Room’s vertical layout, zoom, or position; do not assume that it alters the prerecorded source.
- The stream is unstable or difficult to assess: Preview and monitor it, test the setup, and leave upload-bandwidth headroom. Keyframe settings address live delivery, not embedded bars.
