After it connects, Restreamer displays the stream bitrate in its main window. The steps below use the current Restreamer documentation; older 0.6.x instructions describe a deprecated interface.
Before you add the key
Restreamer needs a video source configured before it can publish an output. You also need an active YouTube account and a stream key from YouTube’s live-stream or encoder controls. Restreamer’s guide calls the credential a “valid streaming ID from YouTube” and links to its YouTube setup guide. For the current YouTube Studio screen labels and account requirements, follow YouTube’s own encoder instructions; the Restreamer guide does not document those details.
If you have not configured a source, start with Restreamer’s Quick Start, which covers adding a video source and optionally setting up audio. Restreamer can run in Docker on AMD64 and ARM systems, and the project provides a Raspberry Pi-oriented image; see the official repository for deployment information. A compatible server you already own may be enough.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, examples, or logs. If you need to show a placeholder, use [YOUR_YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY], never a real credential.

Add the YouTube stream key in current Restreamer
- Open Publication Service. In Restreamer, go to Publication Service and select YouTube. If YouTube is not already configured as a service, add it there.
- Copy the key from YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream/encoder controls, copy the stream key for the stream you intend to use. Restreamer’s documentation does not specify the current YouTube Studio button names, so use YouTube’s current on-screen instructions.
- Enter the credential. Paste the stream key into Restreamer’s YouTube streaming ID field. Check that the whole value was copied and that no extra spaces were included.
- Save and start the publication. Save the YouTube service settings, then start the publication. Restreamer says that once connected, the live stream bitrate appears in its main window. This confirms a connection is reported; it is still sensible to check YouTube’s live view to confirm the intended stream is appearing.
Check the connection and end the event safely
If the publication does not connect
Open the publication process details and inspect the logs for the reported error. As practical checks, verify that the stream key was copied correctly, that the selected YouTube account and live setup are available, and that the configured source is active. Restreamer’s publication-services manual describes publication services and process information; its guidance does not establish one universal cause for connection failures.
When the event is over
If preserving YouTube’s DVR archive matters, end the stream on YouTube first, then stop the Restreamer publication. Restreamer warns that interrupting the stream in Restreamer during a live event may prevent YouTube from saving it in the DVR archive; its guide says, “Always end the stream on YouTube first after an event.”

Current instructions versus the deprecated 0.6.x guide
Use Publication Service → YouTube → streaming ID → save → start for the current documented workflow. The archived Restreamer 0.6.x YouTube guide is explicitly deprecated. It refers to an “External Streaming-Server” checkbox, an RTMP selection, and an RTMP URL form; do not combine those old labels with the current interface.
Home-server networking and publication options
Router port forwarding may be relevant when you need to reach the Restreamer service from outside your home network. The project’s deployment information does not establish that every outbound publication to YouTube requires inbound port forwarding, so do not open router ports automatically just to add a YouTube key. Follow the needs of your particular network and deployment.

For a direct YouTube destination, choose Restreamer’s built-in YouTube publication service. The manual also describes general publication modes including HLS, RTMP, and SRT for other destinations or paths. It characterizes HLS latency as dependent on configuration, with a minimum of 10–30 seconds; RTMP as about 1–2 seconds; and SRT as under one second. These are Restreamer’s general descriptions, not guarantees for the full path to YouTube.
