You can’t send a YouTube live-stream feed by SFTP. YouTube uses SFTP or Aspera for high-volume media and metadata delivery by eligible partners; to broadcast a pre-recorded video as a live stream, use an encoder on your Mac, connect it to YouTube with a stream URL and key, and play the file through the encoder.
Why SFTP is not the right tool for a YouTube live stream
YouTube separates live-stream ingest from media delivery. A live broadcast reaches YouTube from an encoder using a stream URL and stream key. SFTP and Aspera are asset-delivery options for partners who regularly deliver more than 100 assets per month—not a way to start a live broadcast. Eligibility and onboarding for that partner workflow are not established for ordinary channels; see YouTube’s partner-delivery documentation.
For a Mac user with a recorded video, the relevant task is to make an encoder send that file as a live feed. The precise controls for loading and repeating a local file vary by encoder, so consult the current instructions for the encoder you choose rather than assuming a particular Mac menu or button.
Before you start: confirm your channel is ready
- Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check readiness before you plan to go live.
- Choose an encoder that supports playback of a media file as its video source. Confirm that it can also send audio, repeat the file if needed, and stop playback when you want to end the broadcast.
- Have a stable internet connection with upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom.

How to stream a pre-recorded video from a Mac
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, then select Go live in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, enter the URL and key supplied in the Live Control Room. Use an RTMPS URL or preset if the encoder supports it; RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. Keep the key private because it authorizes an encoder to publish to your channel.
- Load the recording in the encoder. Use the encoder’s documented media-file playback feature to select the video. Check its instructions for setting the file as the video source, including audio routing, repeat/loop behavior, and start/stop controls. These steps are encoder-specific; YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish a universal Mac interface.
- Start early and verify the broadcast. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before an event. Check the Live Control Room preview, watch page, audio and video, and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Maintain the recommended bandwidth headroom.
- End the stream through the configured workflow. Follow the encoder’s instructions and end the event in the Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Choosing how to play the file
The method depends on how much hands-on control you want and what the selected encoder supports. A software encoder running on the Mac is the typical do-it-yourself route; a dedicated hardware encoder is another option. YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as hardware with scheduled pre-recorded playback features, but it is optional—not a requirement for streaming from a Mac.
