Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo verify an uploaded video archive on a VPS, compare each destination file’s SHA-256 checksum with the checksum of its original, then inspect the destination with ffprobe and test playback through the actual serving path. These checks answer different questions: a matching checksum establishes that the two compared files are byte-for-byte identical, while ffprobe reports whether it can identify the file’s container and media streams. Neither alone proves that viewers can play it.
What each verification check proves
| Check | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| SHA-256 checksum comparison | Whether the destination file matches the specific source file used for comparison, byte for byte. | Whether the source itself is complete or playable. |
ffprobe inspection |
Whether FFmpeg can open the file as multimedia and identify its container and streams. | Whether the file is served with correct permissions, reachable at its URL, or playable through the real client path. |
| Playback through the real path | Whether the intended serving route and client can play the file in practice. | By itself, whether the uploaded file is byte-for-byte identical to the source. |
Use all three when readiness matters: identity, media inspectability, and end-to-end playback are separate conditions.
1. Compare source and VPS checksums
Run the checksum command on the source before transferring the archive, then run the same command against the corresponding file on the VPS. GNU Coreutils documents checksum generation and checking, including SHA-2 algorithms, as a means of detecting file corruption: GNU Coreutils 9.11: cksum invocation.
- On the source: generate a SHA-256 digest for each file and save the output alongside the transfer record. For a single file with GNU Coreutils, use
sha256sum "video.mp4". - On the VPS: run
sha256sumon the corresponding uploaded file, for examplesha256sum "/srv/archive/video.mp4". - Compare the digest values: the SHA-256 strings must match exactly. Also confirm the names and paths refer to the intended source and destination pair.
- If they differ: do not mark the destination verified. Check that you compared the right files, then re-upload or diagnose the transfer and compare again.
A matching digest means the two files compared are identical at the byte level. It cannot reveal a defect already present in the source; if the original is truncated or unplayable, an identical upload will be too.

- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
2. Inspect the file with ffprobe
After confirming the destination matches its source, use ffprobe to inspect the media. The FFmpeg Project documents ffprobe as a tool for reporting container and stream information; it supports structured output, error reporting, and version reporting. Its documentation also states that it returns a positive exit code when an input cannot be opened or recognized as multimedia: FFmpeg: ffprobe Documentation.
- Check that the tool is available: run
ffprobe -versionon the VPS and record the version shown. - Probe a file: run
ffprobe -v error -show_format -show_streams -of json "/srv/archive/video.mp4". This requests machine-readable JSON for the recognized container and streams, while the error log level helps keep the output focused on errors. - Review the result: confirm that the command opens the intended file and that the output identifies the expected media streams and format. Save the output if you need an audit record or are automating the check.
- Handle a probe failure: a nonzero exit status or missing expected information means the tool could not successfully inspect the file as expected. Recheck the path and filename, and compare the file with its source before deciding whether the upload or source needs attention.
Structured output is useful for repeatable checks across an archive: capture each file’s output and associate it with the matching path and checksum record.

3. Test playback through the actual streaming path
A checksum and a successful probe are not an end-to-end playback test. They do not verify that the serving application can access the file, that permissions are correct, that the URL is reachable, or that the intended player can decode and play it. Serve the file through the same route viewers or the streaming application will use, then test that URL with the intended client.
- Use the real hostname, URL, application, and access conditions rather than opening only the local VPS file.
- Confirm the client can reach the file and play it, not merely that the server returns a response.
- If playback fails, investigate the serving path and client separately from the checksum result; a matching checksum still only confirms identity with the chosen source.
4. Keep an audit record
For each archive file, retain the source and VPS paths, filename, SHA-256 results, ffprobe output, tool versions, and timestamps. GNU Coreutils documents generating and checking digest records, and ffprobe provides structured output and version reporting, making these details practical to preserve for repeatable verification.

If the verified archive is for a YouTube channel that should stay live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option for playing uploaded videos as a continuous stream. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
