A stream key is a secret: never publish it in a command example, screenshot, or public log.
Before you change the key
Reset the key only if you need to rotate it or replace a compromised one. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. After a reset, update the encoder with the newly generated key; the old key will not match the new configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Make sure you have access to the intended channel and live stream in YouTube Studio.
- Locate the FFmpeg command, script, service unit, or environment-managed configuration that currently supplies the publishing URL.
- Do not paste a real key into a public article, ticket, screenshot, or shared shell history. Treat it as a credential.
Get the matching YouTube key and RTMPS URL
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Under Stream key, copy the key for the stream you intend to publish. If rotating it, select Reset and copy the newly generated key.
- In Stream settings, find Stream URL. To use encrypted delivery, select the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL and copy that exact value. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so do not assume it is the secure endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
The URL and key must belong to the same intended stream. Copy both from its current Live Control Room settings rather than combining a new key with an old or guessed server path.
Replace the destination in FFmpeg
FFmpeg publishes through an output URL. Its documented RTMP-family publishing pattern uses the FLV muxer, but RTMPS availability depends on the installed FFmpeg build and protocol support. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation if the scheme is rejected.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/PATH/STREAM_KEY'This is a pattern, not a working YouTube endpoint: replace the placeholders with the precise RTMPS destination format supplied by Live Control Room. Do not infer a path or expose a real key in a published example.
- On the EC2 server, update the command or the configuration that constructs its output URL. If a script or service manages FFmpeg, edit that source rather than only changing a temporary shell command.
- Use the copied RTMPS destination and the matching current key in the format YouTube provides. Keep the credential in a suitably protected configuration mechanism for your setup.
- Save the change and restart or relaunch the encoder using your normal process. Check FFmpeg’s connection output for errors without sharing output that may contain the key.
Test the feed before the event
Start FFmpeg and check Live Control Room for the incoming stream preview and stream health. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to wait for the preview and then choose Go live when ready. Test the audio and moving picture you expect to send during the actual event, and monitor stream health rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg process means the audience can see and hear correctly. Encoder settings to check
YouTube’s published guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current settings table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure your available upload bandwidth can sustain it. There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
RTMP or RTMPS?

Prefer the current RTMPS endpoint when your FFmpeg build supports it. Do not change to an assumed RTMP address simply because an RTMPS attempt fails; first verify the copied endpoint and build support.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube rejects the key or receives the wrong stream
Confirm that the key belongs to the selected live stream and that both the URL and key were copied from its current Live Control Room settings. If you reset the key, replace the value in the encoder configuration as well.
FFmpeg reports a TLS or SSL error
Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL, including its host and scheme, rather than relying on the default RTMP address. YouTube advises trying port 443 if an SSL error persists. Also check whether the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.

The connection times out
Check the endpoint and RTMPS support first. Then investigate the EC2 instance’s outbound route, host firewall, and any network egress policy; those settings vary by instance and network. Publishing from FFmpeg is outbound traffic, so do not open inbound streaming ports merely to send the feed to YouTube.
You cannot connect to the EC2 instance
For SSH to a Linux EC2 instance, verify the instance status and that its security group allows inbound SSH from your operator IP address. AWS also documents browser-based EC2 Instance Connect and Systems Manager Session Manager as access alternatives. This is separate from FFmpeg’s outbound connection to YouTube.
