To detect changes to an Indian bank’s interest-rate page, save a screenshot of the bank’s official page on a regular schedule, compare it with a reviewed baseline under consistent browser conditions, and verify any visual alert against the live rate table and its qualifications. A screenshot difference is a signal to investigate—not proof that a rate changed.
Choose the exact official rate page
Start with the bank’s own website, rather than a comparison site, and record the page URL. The Reserve Bank of India’s customer-service guidance describes bank websites as a way for customers to access information and calls for interest rates and service charges to be displayed for quick reference; it does not require screenshot monitoring. RBI customer-service guidance
Choose the product category you actually need to watch. Banks may publish separate pages or tables for savings accounts, domestic term deposits, NRE/NRO deposits, or bulk deposits. A rate without its category and conditions can be misleading. For example, Indian Bank’s deposit-rate page presents rates alongside details such as deposit type and effective dates. - Record the exact URL and the product or category name.
- Identify the table, heading, effective date, footnotes, and eligibility text that should remain visible in the capture.
- If two categories matter, monitor them separately rather than treating one table as a proxy for the other.
Choose a capture method and scope
A manual process is sufficient if you can save captures reliably and review them on schedule. Browser automation is more repeatable and can run on a schedule, but it requires setup and control of the rendering environment. Playwright documents screenshot baselines and visual comparisons; it is one implementation option, not the only suitable tool. Playwright visual comparisons
#1 Best Overall
| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual screenshots | You want a low-setup process with direct human review. | Captures and comparisons depend on someone following the schedule consistently. |
| Browser automation with visual comparison | You need repeatable captures and scheduled checks. | Requires a stable browser environment and review rules for dynamic content and rendering noise. |
| Focused capture around the rate table | You want to reduce changes from unrelated parts of a long page. | May omit effective dates or qualifications outside the selected region. |
| Full-page capture | You need surrounding terms, footnotes, or eligibility notes preserved. | Unrelated page changes can create additional visual differences. |
Playwright supports viewport and full-page screenshots, and can provide screenshot buffers for post-processing or comparison with another tool. Playwright screenshots Whichever scope you choose, include enough context to interpret the rate: at minimum the table heading and the relevant date or qualifiers. For a long page, use separate named captures for the table and for notes that do not fit in the same image.
Set up a manual screenshot routine
- Open the bank’s official rate page and confirm that its URL and product category match your monitoring target.
- Set a consistent browser window size and page zoom. Wait for the rate table and nearby notes to finish loading.
- Capture the focused table or the full page, as appropriate. Save the image with the capture date and time, and keep the URL and product/category in the filename or adjacent notes.
- Review the first capture before treating it as your baseline. Confirm that the intended table, date, and qualifications are visible and legible.
- Repeat at a cadence that suits how quickly you need to notice changes. Daily or weekly checks are choices, not an RBI requirement or a universally established frequency.
- Compare the new image with the last reviewed baseline. Inspect every flagged difference rather than assuming it represents a rate update.
- After checking the live page, promote the new capture to baseline only if you have reviewed and accepted the page state. Keep the previous image and a brief review note.
Automate capture and comparison with Playwright
The following Node.js example uses Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion. It captures a named page region after it appears, compares it with a stored baseline, and writes the capture time and target URL to metadata. It assumes you have installed @playwright/test and configured the bank URL and a selector for the relevant table or its containing region. Run it in the same browser, operating-system, viewport, and capture mode each time; visual rendering can vary with browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
const pageUrl = process.env.BANK_RATE_URL;
const targetSelector = process.env.RATE_REGION_SELECTOR;
if (!pageUrl || !targetSelector) {
throw new Error('Set BANK_RATE_URL and RATE_REGION_SELECTOR');
}
test('bank rate page matches its reviewed screenshot baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await page.goto(pageUrl, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const region = page.locator(targetSelector);
await region.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
const captureTime = new Date().toISOString();
await writeFile('rate-capture-metadata.json', JSON.stringify({

});
Store the baseline screenshot in version control or another location where the reviewed original cannot be silently replaced. The first run creates a baseline in the Playwright snapshot location; inspect it before accepting it. Later runs compare against it and fail the assertion when the image differs beyond the configured comparison behavior. Consult the Playwright documentation for baseline updating and comparison options, and do not update a baseline automatically just because a run flagged a difference.
Use an explicit selector for the rate region instead of capturing an unstable page area by coordinates where possible. If the effective date or important footnotes are outside the table, capture them too. A table-only baseline that omits the applicable date or conditions may flag a rate change without enough context to determine what changed.

Reduce noise without hiding meaningful changes
A mismatch may come from layout shifts, banners, rotating content, fonts, or a different rendering environment. Keep the browser and capture settings consistent, wait for the target region to appear, and disable animations where appropriate. If you mask dynamic regions or tune comparison tolerances, keep the masked area narrow and document the choice: broad exclusions can hide a changed rate or effective date. Playwright notes that rendering differs across environments and documents screenshot comparison options. Playwright visual comparisons
- Keep the same viewport, browser version, operating system, zoom, and headless/headed mode across runs.
- Wait for the rate table, date, and notes to load; avoid taking the screenshot while content is still shifting.
- Do not mask the rate cells, table headings, effective dates, or relevant qualifications.
- Keep both the original capture and the difference image or equivalent review record.
Verify an alert before changing the baseline
Open the live official page and compare the actual text and context, not only the pixels. Check the affected rate cell, its effective date, deposit type, balance or tenor band, customer category, and whether the rate applies to fresh deposits or renewals. These distinctions appear in bank rate information and determine what a visible change means; Indian Bank’s page provides an example of rate tables with qualifications. Indian Bank deposit rates
Preserve the old screenshot, new screenshot, comparison output, URL, capture times, and a short note explaining what you verified. If the live page has reverted or the difference is only a layout change, record that outcome and retain the reviewed baseline. Replace the baseline only after a person has accepted the updated page state.

Troubleshoot common screenshot-monitoring failures
- The capture is blank or missing the table: The page may still be loading or the selector may not match the current page. Confirm the URL, inspect the selector, and wait for the target region to become visible before capture.
- Every run reports a difference: Compare the browser and operating-system environment, viewport, page zoom, and capture mode. Look for rotating content, fonts, banners, or animations before adjusting thresholds.
- A difference appears outside the rate table: Switch to a focused capture if it still includes the table heading and relevant date/notes, or retain a full-page capture and review the unrelated change separately.
- The rate seems different but the alert is ambiguous: Read the live cell and its row/column labels, then inspect the effective date, product category, customer eligibility, balance/tenor band, and renewal or fresh-deposit terms.
- A new baseline would overwrite useful history: Save the current and prior captures and the review note first. Do not accept a baseline update until you have verified the page manually.
