This guide uses Playwright with GitHub Actions: Playwright controls the page and screenshot; the workflow supplies the recurring trigger and artifact storage.
What you need to decide first
- Capture target: choose a URL, or a list of URLs, and the page state you want to inspect.
- Viewport: use explicit width and height to check responsive breakpoints. Use a device preset when you need device emulation characteristics such as user agent or touch behavior, not just a particular page width. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.
- Image scope: capture the visible viewport, the full scrollable page, or one element. Playwright documents these options in its screenshot guide.
- Purpose: a dated archive lets people review how a site looked; visual regression testing compares new images with a baseline to flag changes.
- Retention: decide how long to keep images. GitHub Actions artifacts can be configured with a retention period.
Build a Playwright script for multiple viewport sizes
The example below captures the visible viewport at three CSS viewport sizes. It waits for a page-specific heading to become visible rather than assuming that a fixed delay is sufficient. Replace the URL and selector with the page and content that matter to you.
Install Playwright
In a new project with Node.js installed, run:

}Run it locally with node capture.mjs. It creates screenshots/mobile.png, screenshots/tablet.png, and screenshots/desktop.png. Each browser context uses the stated viewport dimensions, making the responsive-layout intent explicit.
Change the capture scope or page state
- Full page: set
fullPage: truein the screenshot options to capture beyond the visible viewport. - One element: locate the target element and call
locator.screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/element.png' })instead of taking a page screenshot. - Device behavior: use a Playwright device descriptor when the test should emulate more than dimensions. Device descriptors can include settings such as user agent and touch behavior; consult the emulation guide.
- Page readiness: replace
h1with a stable selector that signifies the content you need. If the page depends on a particular application state, wait for that state explicitly. A fixed sleep can be too short on one run and waste time on another.
Schedule the script with GitHub Actions
Playwright performs the capture; GitHub Actions decides when to run it. GitHub documents scheduled workflow triggers in its workflow events reference. Add this file to your repository as .github/workflows/screenshots.yml:

retention-days: 14The cron expression runs daily at 08:17 UTC. Change it to the cadence you need; scheduled workflow times use UTC, so account for daylight-saving changes if you are thinking in local time. workflow_dispatch also lets you start a run manually. The artifact upload keeps each run’s image files available for the configured retention period. GitHub’s Playwright CI guide shows the broader CI setup and artifact pattern.
Keep recurring captures comparable
If people will compare images over time, control the conditions as much as practical: use the same browser, viewport dimensions, operating environment, and capture settings. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors; see its visual comparison documentation.

Archive or visual regression?
- Archive: retain dated captures for a person to inspect. Predictable filenames and per-run artifact names help keep outputs understandable.
- Regression check: save a baseline, capture later images in a consistent environment, then compare them. Playwright Test supports screenshot baselines and comparison; dynamic regions may need deliberate handling so expected content changes do not overwhelm meaningful layout changes.
GitHub artifacts are convenient for short-lived CI output. If you need a longer history, alerts, or managed review, plan a separate storage or monitoring destination and its retention policy.
Troubleshooting scheduled captures
The script works locally but fails in CI
Make sure the workflow installs the same browser engine the script launches. The example installs Chromium and runs in headless mode; check the workflow log for missing browser dependencies or an installation failure.

The screenshot is blank or missing content
Navigation completion does not always mean the specific content is ready. Wait for a meaningful page selector or application state, confirm the selector still exists, and inspect the page URL and console output when the wait times out.
Images differ between runs without a code change
Rendering can vary across environments and browser versions, and the page itself may contain dynamic content. Keep the runtime stable and decide how to handle changing regions before treating pixel differences as regressions.

The workflow ran at an unexpected local time
Scheduled GitHub Actions workflows use UTC. Recalculate the cron time for your desired local schedule and account for seasonal clock changes where applicable.
Artifacts are unavailable later
Check the configured retention-days and the workflow run that produced the artifact. For a history longer than the artifact retention you chose, upload results to a storage service with a retention policy suited to your review process.
