You can run OBS Studio on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Ubuntu VM and send a continuous stream to YouTube, but installing OBS is only part of the setup. OBS needs a usable Linux graphics/display session, OCI must allow SSH administration and outbound connections, and the chosen VM must sustain your encode and network load. This guide targets Ubuntu 24.04 on an architecture supported by the OCI image and OBS packages you select. No particular OCI shape, region, or display arrangement is validated here, so test those choices before relying on the stream unattended.

What you need to decide before creating the VPS

OCI supplies the VM and virtual cloud network (VCN); OBS is a desktop application that must run in a suitable Linux graphics environment. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland among its Linux requirements. A minimal shell-only server does not automatically provide that environment, and satisfying the basic requirements does not prove that a VM can encode your intended stream reliably.

  • Ubuntu release: This walkthrough uses Ubuntu 24.04 as its target because the OBS Project download page described its official Ubuntu PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. Check the OBS Project’s current download and installation instructions for the exact release before installing.
  • Architecture: Select an OCI Ubuntu image and VM architecture for which the current OBS package and its dependencies are available. Confirm that compatibility rather than assuming every image architecture is covered by the same package instructions.
  • Shape and region: Choose based on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and sustained outbound bandwidth you need. No shape or region is established as sufficient for a particular output by the available guidance.
  • Display arrangement: Decide how OBS will access an X or Wayland session, and test that exact arrangement on the VM. The official OBS requirements do not prescribe an OCI-specific virtual display setup.

OBS cautions that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It also says CPU requirements vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Treat capacity as something to measure on your actual instance, not infer from a vCPU count alone.

Launch an Ubuntu instance in OCI

  1. Create a Compute instance from an Ubuntu platform image. Select Ubuntu 24.04 if the current OBS package guidance covers it, then confirm the image architecture against OBS package availability. OCI’s instance workflow places the VM’s virtual network interface card (VNIC) in a selected subnet.
  2. Choose a shape for a testable workload. Allow for the intended encoder and output settings, plus headroom. Do not treat an Always Free or low-cost shape as proven suitable for a particular resolution; there is no cited shape-specific encoding benchmark for this workflow.
  3. Choose how you will administer the VM. If you use direct SSH, assign a public IP only if needed and restrict access to your trusted source address range. A bastion or another private-access approach can avoid exposing SSH directly to the public internet.
  4. Ensure the VM has an outbound route. OBS must be able to reach YouTube’s ingest service. The stream is an outbound push, so YouTube does not require you to open an inbound ingest port on the VM.

Set OCI network rules without locking yourself out

OCI network controls and the Ubuntu guest’s own firewall are separate layers. Oracle recommends network security groups (NSGs) over security lists for managing rules. Keep inbound access limited to administration and any other service you actually need; allow outbound connectivity for the OBS-to-YouTube stream.

  • For SSH administration, permit only your trusted address range where practical rather than allowing access from everywhere.
  • Do not add inbound rules for YouTube ingest simply because OBS is streaming. OBS initiates the connection outbound.
  • Be cautious with host-firewall changes. Oracle’s Ubuntu platform-image guidance warns that changing rules with UFW might prevent the instance from booting. Follow Oracle’s Ubuntu-specific guidance if you need to alter guest firewall rules, and preserve a recovery route before changing access.

Install OBS on Ubuntu 24.04

Use the OBS Project’s current official download and installation page for the release and architecture you selected. At the time reflected by the available guidance, that page described an official PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer and showed these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studio

Run them in the VM’s Ubuntu environment only after confirming the current OBS instructions still cover your selected image. An older OBS Linux installation article, dated 2021-08-26, gives the same commands and says Ubuntu 18.04 or newer; that older statement should not be treated as proof of current package support for every Ubuntu release.

Make sure OBS has a display session

Before configuring a stream, establish a working X Window System or Wayland arrangement that meets OBS’s Linux graphics requirements, including OpenGL 3.3. A server installed without a desktop session may not have a display for OBS to use. The official requirements do not provide a tested OCI recipe for a virtual display or unattended desktop, so do not assume a shell login alone solves this. Verify that OBS launches and can render its preview in the exact session and startup arrangement you intend to keep running.

Configure YouTube Live and connect OBS

  1. Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours according to YouTube Help, so complete this before scheduling a test.
  2. Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Obtain the stream key there. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of screenshots, shell history, source code, and logs.
  3. Choose YouTube RTMPS in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Select the matching YouTube service/ingest option available in your OBS version and enter the stream key through the settings interface.
  4. Set video and audio output to match YouTube’s current encoder table. For standard SDR H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include the examples below. Select the row that matches your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures are not universal settings for all codecs or formats.
  5. Start a private or unlisted test and check Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview arrives before making a broadcast public.
Standard SDR H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate Recommended keyframe interval
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Check the current YouTube table for other codecs, frame rates, or output formats rather than extending these H.264 examples to them.

Your VM needs sustainable outbound bandwidth above the configured video bitrate, with additional headroom for audio, protocol overhead, and variation. This is a practical capacity requirement, not an OCI performance guarantee. Validate the network path from the selected region under a sustained, realistic stream load.

Check copyright and channel eligibility separately from the technical setup

A stream that reaches YouTube successfully is not automatically cleared for every use or eligible for monetization. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content requirements for your channel and content. The technical settings above do not determine whether a channel or a particular video complies. StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist is also available as a pre-stream check.

Test the VPS before relying on it unattended

Run a private or unlisted stream long enough to observe the real workload. A single successful preview proves only that the stream connected at that time; it does not establish continuous availability or recovery behavior.

  • OBS launches in the chosen display/session arrangement and its preview renders.
  • The selected encoder sustains the target output without rendering or encoding lag.
  • YouTube receives the stream, and the outbound connection remains stable during a realistic sustained test.
  • The stream recovers in the specific failure cases you need to handle, tested one by one.

For an unattended deployment, document the tested process supervisor or session startup method, behavior after reboot and process exit, stream-key handling, log location, alerting, and recovery steps. A systemd unit, desktop session, or virtual display is not by itself proof of uninterrupted operation. The available official guidance does not establish an end-to-end OCI/OBS/YouTube recipe that survives every reboot, disconnect, or display-session failure.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
OBS does not launch, or the preview is blank Graphics and display session Confirm the VM has an active, usable X or Wayland session and meets OBS’s Linux graphics requirements. Test the chosen session arrangement directly instead of assuming a headless shell is enough.
OBS installs unsuccessfully Ubuntu release, architecture, or package guidance Recheck the OBS Project’s current installation instructions against the exact Ubuntu release and architecture. Do not rely on the older Ubuntu 18.04+ article as current confirmation for every image.
SSH stops working after firewall changes OCI VCN rules or Ubuntu host firewall Review OCI’s NSG or security-list rules and the guest firewall as separate controls. Oracle warns that UFW changes on Ubuntu platform images might prevent boot; use Oracle’s current Ubuntu-specific guidance and a recovery path.
YouTube does not receive the stream Stream key, ingest selection, channel activation, or outbound route Check the key privately in OBS, confirm the channel can go live, select YouTube RTMPS, and verify outbound connectivity. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
Stream drops or OBS reports lag Encoder capacity or sustained egress Compare the active codec, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s bitrate guidance. Test CPU/encoder behavior and outbound stability on the actual shape; lower the workload if that instance cannot sustain it.
OBS or the stream does not resume after a reboot or disconnect Session startup and recovery configuration Check the tested supervisor/session startup method, logs, and restart procedure. Verify each failure case deliberately; do not assume OBS will restart or reconnect in every display-session arrangement.

Estimate the cost and operational trade-offs

An OCI VPS is a do-it-yourself option: you select and administer compute, network rules, the Linux display environment, OBS, and recovery behavior. Review Oracle’s current regional pricing for the shape and storage you plan to use; the available guidance does not establish a cost for a suitable always-on configuration. Also account for the time needed to validate the encode and maintain the VM. A low listed compute price does not establish that the instance can sustain the target stream.
