Call ApiFlash from a Django view, keep the access key on the server, and return the screenshot bytes in an HttpResponse. The example below validates the target URL’s scheme, applies a timeout, checks the upstream response, and returns a safe error if capture fails.
Set up the ApiFlash key and HTTP client
Install the illustrative requests dependency in your Django environment:
python -m pip install requests
Store the key in deployment configuration rather than source control or browser code. For example, set an environment variable named APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY in the environment where Django runs. In settings.py:
import os
APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY = os.environ["APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY"]
ApiFlash documents its HTTPS endpoint as https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. It accepts GET parameters in the query string or POST form data; both approaches still require keeping the key server-side.

Build a Django view that returns the screenshot
This implementation pattern uses ApiFlash’s documented HTTP contract and Django response classes; ApiFlash does not appear to publish a Django-specific sample in the documentation reviewed. The view handles a direct image response suitable for displaying inline.
# views.py
import requests
from django.conf import settings
from django.http import HttpResponse, JsonResponse
from django.views.decorators.http import require_GET
APIFLASH_ENDPOINT = "https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage"
@require_GET
def screenshot(request):
target = request.GET.get("url", "")
if not target.startswith(("https://", "http://")):
return JsonResponse(
{"error": "Provide a complete http(s) URL."},
status=400,
)
params = {
"access_key": settings.APIFLASH_ACCESS_KEY,
"url": target,
"format": "png",
# Optional examples:
# "full_page": "true",
# "wait_for": ".page-ready",
}
try:
upstream = requests.get(
APIFLASH_ENDPOINT,
params=params,
timeout=(5, 45),
)
except requests.RequestException:
return JsonResponse(
{"error": "Screenshot service request failed."},
status=502,
)
if upstream.status_code != 200:
# Log a suitably redacted upstream error on the server.
return JsonResponse(
{"error": "Screenshot capture failed."},
status=502,
)
content_type = upstream.headers.get("Content-Type", "image/jpeg")
if not content_type.startswith("image/"):
return JsonResponse(
{"error": "Screenshot service returned an unexpected response."},
status=502,
)
return HttpResponse(upstream.content, content_type=content_type)
Wire the view into a URL pattern, for example in the application’s urls.py:
from django.urls import path
from .views import screenshot
urlpatterns = [
path("screenshot/", screenshot, name="screenshot"),
]
A caller can then request /screenshot/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com. Django’s HttpResponse accepts bytes directly, so it is convenient when the screenshot is already in memory. For a downloadable file, Django documents FileResponse for binary files and supports as_attachment=True; if you pass it an in-memory buffer, rewind the buffer first. ApiFlash’s download guide also describes making the capture request on the backend and returning the image body to the browser.
Choose what Django should return
Image bytes for immediate display or download
ApiFlash returns image bytes by default, with response headers identifying the content. Return those bytes when the Django route should directly serve an image, as in the view above. Keep the returned content type aligned with the upstream response.

JSON when the app needs output links
Set response_type=json when the application needs a link to the screenshot or links to extracted HTML or text. ApiFlash’s JSON response includes links to the screenshot and, when enabled, extracted content. Your Django view should parse and return that JSON rather than treating it as image bytes.
Inline display versus attachment
Use an ordinary image response for inline display. Use Django’s FileResponse or a response with a download disposition when the browser should download the result. The choice is about how your Django route serves the bytes, not how ApiFlash captures the page.
Select capture settings for the page
ApiFlash requires a valid access_key and a complete target url including http:// or https://. Its API accepts additional capture parameters; encode values as required when sending them.
| Need | ApiFlash parameter or behavior |
|---|---|
| Choose image output | format supports jpeg (the default), png, and webp. quality applies to JPEG and WebP. |
| Set viewport dimensions | width and height; documented defaults are 1920 by 1080. The API also constrains dimensions and total pixel area. |
| Capture the entire page | full_page=true; when enabled, the height setting does not apply. |
| Wait for page loading | wait_until accepts dom_loaded, page_loaded, or network_idle (the documented default). wait_until_timeout sets a cap; capture can proceed with whatever has loaded when the cap is reached. |
| Wait for a specific element | wait_for waits for a CSS selector to appear. The documentation says capture aborts if no match appears within 15 seconds. |
| Add a fixed delay | delay allows up to 10 seconds. ApiFlash recommends wait_for or wait_until where possible because they are more reliable. |
| Control cache use | fresh and ttl control refresh and cache duration. The documented default TTL is 86,400 seconds and maximum is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days); identical successful-parameter calls may use cache and do not count against monthly quota, according to ApiFlash. |
| Adjust page content or browser context | Optional controls include no_cookie_banners, no_ads, no_tracking, element, crop, user_agent, cookies, headers, css, and js. |
Prefer a readiness condition that matches the page. For a page that fills in content after its initial load, waiting for a selector can be more meaningful than waiting an arbitrary number of seconds. Use full-page capture only when the complete document is needed; a viewport capture is often the more appropriate output for a fixed preview.

Secure the Django capture endpoint
The example accepts a URL from an incoming request, so it should not be exposed as an unrestricted capture proxy. In a production application, authenticate or rate-limit access to the Django route as appropriate and constrain which hosts users may submit. An arbitrary target URL can otherwise direct capture requests to unintended destinations; the inbound access policy is the application’s responsibility.
- Keep the ApiFlash key in server-side configuration and out of frontend JavaScript and user-visible links. ApiFlash warns that frontend API calls expose the access key.
- Do not include the key in application logs, exception messages, or public error responses. The query string sent upstream contains it.
- Validate the URL beyond checking its scheme when your application has a defined set of permitted hosts.
- Return a generic error to the caller and log only suitably redacted diagnostic information.
Handle errors, quotas, and operating limits
ApiFlash documents these API status codes. Distinguish invalid input from upstream failures in server-side logs, while returning a safe and useful response to your own caller.
| Upstream status | Documented meaning | Django response approach |
|---|---|---|
400 |
Invalid parameters or target that cannot be captured | Check the submitted URL and capture options; report a caller error if appropriate. |
401 |
Invalid or revoked key | Check the server’s configured credential without exposing it to the caller. |
402 |
Plan quota exceeded | Surface a safe service-unavailable or quota message according to your application’s API contract; inspect quota status. |
403 |
Feature not supported by the plan | Review the selected capture option and current account entitlement. |
429 |
Rate limiting | Apply backoff or queue work rather than immediately repeating requests. |
500 |
Internal capture failure | Log a redacted diagnostic and allow a controlled retry if appropriate. |
ApiFlash documents a limit of 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400; over-rate requests are delayed, while requests exceeding the burst may be terminated with status 429. It also documents a limit of 5 requests per hour for repeated identical failed captures. The documentation does not state a year for these figures.
Successful capture responses include X-Quota-Limit, X-Quota-Remaining, and X-Quota-Reset. Use these response headers or the documented quota endpoint, /v1/urltoimage/quota, to monitor consumption rather than hard-coding a plan allowance. ApiFlash’s documentation does not establish current plan prices or quotas by plan, so check the current account terms before making cost assumptions. It also does not publish uptime statistics in the reviewed FAQ; no independent performance benchmark is established here.

Troubleshoot common integration failures
Django returns 400 before calling ApiFlash
The submitted parameter is missing or does not begin with http:// or https://. Send a complete URL and validate it against your application’s host policy.
ApiFlash returns 401
The configured key may be wrong or revoked. Check the deployment environment and Django setting without printing the secret to logs.
Capture fails on a dynamic page
The page may not have rendered the desired content when capture begins. Select a suitable wait_until condition or wait for a specific CSS selector with wait_for. A fixed delay is available, but ApiFlash recommends the readiness controls where possible.
The capture is unexpectedly incomplete or too large
Check whether the desired result is a viewport or full-page capture. For full-page output use full_page=true and do not rely on height; for viewport output, set appropriate dimensions and respect the API’s documented dimension and total-pixel constraints.

Django reports an unexpected response or a 502
Check the upstream status and content type. A successful HTTP exchange is not sufficient if the service returned JSON or another non-image body while your view expects image bytes. If using response_type=json, parse that response as JSON instead.
ApiFlash returns 402, 403, or 429
A 402 indicates quota exhaustion, a 403 indicates an unsupported plan feature, and a 429 indicates rate limiting. Check quota headers or the quota endpoint, confirm the selected feature is available, and avoid immediate retry loops.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API can return an image or PDF without you managing a browser in Django; its parameter names also support those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Can I call ApiFlash directly from Django’s frontend?
You can, but ApiFlash warns that frontend calls expose the access key. Make the request from your Django server instead.
Does ApiFlash provide a Django library?
The ApiFlash documentation reviewed documents the HTTP endpoint and parameters, but does not appear to publish a Django-specific sample. The view above is an integration pattern using Django and Python HTTP handling.
