Balance narration and cartoon audio by listening to representative parts of the complete mix, adjusting levels at their sources before fine-tuning them in OBS, and checking the finished loop for both loud peaks and perceived loudness. Similar-looking meter bars do not guarantee that speech and effects will sound equally loud to viewers.
Start with the sound, not matching meter bars
Play sections that include quiet and loud narration, cartoon dialogue, music, sound effects and transitions between clips. Adjust the mix until the story remains understandable without flattening the cartoon’s intentional dynamics. Listen to the actual output rather than trying to make every source’s meter look identical: OBS cautions that sounds with similar meter readings may still seem louder to viewers.
OBS’s green, yellow and red zones are rough cues, not a formula for a narration-to-cartoon balance. Its guidance suggests speech reaching the upper yellow range, while gameplay or other content sits lower and background music and effects generally remain in green. Treat that as a starting reference for OBS’s meter, not a guaranteed perceptual target.
Set levels through the audio chain
- Check each source’s own controls. Start with the device or application volume and gain. If relevant, check the operating-system mixer too.
- Adjust OBS only after the source. Fine-tune the OBS audio fader while listening to the mix, rather than using it to compensate blindly for an upstream level problem.
- Check the full routing. For a media-source loop, verify the media playback and any other audio routed to the stream. Duplicate paths can unexpectedly raise a sound’s level.
- Monitor the output. Listen both early in the chain and through OBS audio monitoring so you can catch differences between the source and what OBS sends onward. A pair of monitoring headphones is optional; use a playback device that helps you judge the mix reliably.
Control peaks without flattening the cartoon
If narration contains occasional unexpectedly loud words, or cartoon effects jump sharply, modest compression on that source may reduce peaks before you make the final level adjustment. Listen for pumping or other audible side effects, and preserve deliberate changes in the cartoon’s dynamics.
#1 Best Overall
- [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
- [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
- [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
- [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.
- [Controllable Vibrant RGB] RGB button on the audio mixer DJ meets different live streaming themes. Lights on the video mixer is vibrant but not harsh on your eyes. Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
There is no evidence-based universal OBS compressor threshold, ratio, attack or release setting for this particular mix. Real-time correction cannot predict what comes next and may override intended dynamic changes; peak limiting is used when gain is applied by a real-time loudness controller. Choose settings by listening to your own material rather than treating a generic preset as a proven recipe.
Prevent clipping and judge loudness separately
OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital full-scale maximum; a signal above it can clip and distort. Watch the peak programme meter and its peak hold for unexpectedly loud passages. OBS’s smaller moving indicator is a short-window VU-style measurement, closer to sound pressure or loudness than the main peak bar—but neither a safe peak nor a particular meter reading proves that narration and cartoons will have consistent perceived loudness.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
OBS’s technical documentation describes −20 dBFS as its alignment level and −9 dBFS as the permitted maximum level in the meter’s technical explanation. These are OBS meter conventions and margins, not a YouTube loudness target or required fader settings. Keep peak safety and perceived balance as separate checks.
Use LUFS to compare files, not as a YouTube Live rule
If you have a loudness meter, integrated loudness in LUFS can help compare whole sections or complete files more usefully than peak levels alone. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect lets you choose a LUFS target. Its manual gives −23 LUFS as the default, describing it as the EBU R 128 broadcast target and a reasonable broadcast spoken-word default; it also says published streaming targets are usually a few LU higher.

- Compact, feature-rich livestreaming USB audio mixer provides high-quality sound for desktop audio production
- Plug-and-play connectivity to computer or mobile device (no special drivers required)
- Loopback function makes it easy to mix mic and instrument inputs with background music, game sounds, or other audio input from a computer – and send the stereo mix back to the computer for streaming

- Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
Do not treat −23 LUFS as YouTube’s live-stream target. YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a LUFS target, and the available guidance does not establish that YouTube live normalizes separate narration and cartoon elements or guarantees consistent perceived loudness at playback.
When normalizing ordinary stereo material in Audacity, keep left and right channels linked. Audacity warns that normalizing them independently can change stereo balance; independent treatment is appropriate only when the channels are genuinely separate recordings.

Test a complete loop before going live
- Record a representative session. Include narration, cartoons, transitions, music and the loudest effects—not just the opening section.
- Listen to the recording from beginning to end. Check whether speech stays understandable, whether any clip changes cause a jump, and whether effects distort or mask the story.
- Try a representative playback device. Headphones can help, but are optional; checking on speakers or another device can reveal a balance that is hard to notice on one system.
- Make a targeted adjustment and repeat. Identify the source or transition that causes the problem, correct it at the source where practical, then reassess the complete mix.
- Check stream health during the live event. YouTube recommends pre-stream tests with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and OBS recommends recording and listening back to a normal session before going live.
Audio checks for the YouTube encoder
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio as advanced settings, with AAC or MP3 audio codecs. These are encoding recommendations; they do not balance narration against cartoon audio or ensure equal perceived loudness.

- Narration is hard to understand although its meter looks active: Listen to the actual mix. Similar meter readings can sound different to viewers; lower masking music or effects, or raise narration carefully while watching for clipping.
- A sound becomes unexpectedly louder in OBS: Check the application or device level, operating-system mixer where relevant, OBS fader and audio routing. Look for the same media audio entering the stream by more than one path.
- A loud word or effect distorts: Inspect the peak hold and keep the signal from exceeding 0 dBFS. Reduce the source level; if isolated peaks remain troublesome, try modest source compression and listen for pumping.
- The stream’s mix seems safe on the meter but inconsistent between clips: Compare integrated loudness or listen to the entire loop, including transitions. Peak readings alone do not show whether a quiet narration section is masked by a loud cartoon scene.
- Stereo placement changes after normalization: Normalize the left and right channels together for ordinary stereo material rather than independently.
- The opening sounds fine but later clips do not: Record and review a representative full loop. A check of one passage cannot expose every scene-to-scene level change.
