That repeats the selected playlist, unlike Autoplay, which chooses a related video. It can play for a long time, but YouTube documents interruptions during extended Autoplay sessions, so this setup cannot promise uninterrupted playback all night or guaranteed 24/7 operation.
How do I set up a Raspberry Pi 5 for YouTube playback?
- Install Raspberry Pi OS. Write the OS to a microSD card, which stores the operating system and files, then connect the Pi 5 to a display and audio device for the room. Raspberry Pi describes its 64-bit OS as intended for newer models, including Pi 5. See Raspberry Pi OS documentation and the Raspberry Pi setup guide.
- Use suitable power. Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 5 A and its 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. With a 5 V at 3 A supply, Raspberry Pi says power available to peripherals is limited to 600 mA. Check Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance when choosing the supply.
- Open YouTube in the desktop browser and navigate to the bedtime-story playlist. Start a video that belongs to that playlist so the playlist controls are available.
- Check the practical setup. Before leaving playback unattended, confirm the playlist contains the intended videos, audio is at a suitable level, the network works, and the display behaves as you want in the room. These are checks for your own setup, not a guarantee that playback will stay uninterrupted.
How do I loop a YouTube playlist?
- On a computer, open a video from the desired playlist.
- Expand the playlist box beside the player if it is collapsed.
- Click Loop in the playlist controls. YouTube says the playlist will repeat continuously.
- Check that the control indicates playlist repeat. Do not confuse it with a control that repeats only the current video.

Playlist Loop or Autoplay: which should I use?

YouTube documents Autoplay separately, and its setting is controlled from the player on computer. For its device-specific guidance, see YouTube’s Autoplay help page. To repeat a particular set of stories, use playlist Loop rather than relying on recommendations.
Will YouTube stop playing if I leave it on?
It may. YouTube says a “Continue watching?” prompt may appear after 60 minutes on the web or 180 minutes on TV during uninterrupted Autoplay viewing. Those documented prompts make it unsafe to assume that a browser session will run unattended without interruption. See YouTube’s explanation of the prompt. The available guidance does not establish that a Raspberry Pi browser avoids these interruptions, nor that it automatically recovers from power, browser, or network failure.

For overnight use, test the actual Pi, browser, network, screen, and audio arrangement before depending on it. Playlist Loop addresses repeat behavior; it does not provide a documented uptime or recovery guarantee.
Does a Pi 5 need extra cooling for bedtime stories?
Cooling is optional for normal use, according to Raspberry Pi’s 2023 article. It specifically says YouTube viewing is less demanding than its heavy CPU stress test. That does not establish the temperature of every enclosure or room, so monitor your own setup if it is enclosed or runs warm. See Raspberry Pi’s heating and cooling guidance.

Check playlist content and rights
Having a playlist repeat does not change the rules for the videos in it. YouTube’s playlists policy disallows, among other things, misleading playlist titles or descriptions and certain collections of otherwise individual videos. That policy page does not determine whether you have the rights to any particular bedtime-story recording. Use videos you are entitled to play and follow YouTube’s applicable rules.
