To capture a website repeatedly, schedule an external job—such as a cron task or hosted scheduler—to call ApiFlash’s screenshot endpoint, then save or route the returned image. The endpoint is https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage; recurrence, timezone, retries, and storage are handled by your scheduler and workflow.
How recurring ApiFlash screenshots work
Each scheduled run sends an authenticated request to ApiFlash with a fully qualified page URL and the capture settings you want. ApiFlash returns image bytes by default; you can request JSON containing a screenshot URL or configure documented S3 output. Your scheduler controls when the request runs, while your script or automation handles the result.
ApiFlash accepts GET query parameters or POST form data. Keep the access key on the server or in your scheduler’s secret store—never expose it in public browser code or logs. See the ApiFlash Screenshot API documentation for the current parameter definitions.
Choose the capture settings before scheduling
Set the viewport and image format
Choose a width and height that match the view you need to monitor. ApiFlash documents JPEG as the default format; PNG and WebP are also available. For a full-page image, enable full-page capture. To capture only a component, specify its CSS selector using the documented element-capture option.

Wait for the right page state
The documented default for wait_until is network_idle. The alternatives are dom_loaded and page_loaded. If the screenshot depends on a particular component, use wait_for with a CSS selector that appears when that component is ready. A fixed delay can add up to 10 seconds, but a selector wait is often more targeted than adding the same delay to every run.
Fonts may render differently if the target site does not serve its own fonts. ApiFlash’s FAQ also cautions that custom headers can interfere with remote font loading. If typography matters, check the captured output and avoid unnecessary headers.
Choose cache behavior deliberately
The documented default cache TTL is 86,400 seconds. ApiFlash lists a configurable TTL range from 0 to 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). Identical requests can return a cached screenshot and do not count against the monthly quota. If each scheduled run must represent a new capture, set fresh=true; if reusing an identical cached result is acceptable, choose a TTL suited to your workflow.

Choose how the image is delivered
- Image bytes: the default response, suitable for a script that writes the response body to a file or passes it to another service.
- JSON: set
response_type=jsonto receive a response that includes a screenshot URL. The API also documents optional extraction parameters for HTML or text links. - S3 output: ApiFlash documents parameters for uploading a screenshot to a bucket. Store bucket credentials as secrets and grant only the permissions the workflow needs.
Set up a recurring capture with cron
This example uses Python and a Unix-like system with Python 3 and the requests package installed. It requests a fresh PNG, checks for an HTTP error, and saves the response bytes. Set the access key as an environment variable rather than putting it in the script.

python3 capture.pyand confirm thatlatest.pngexists and shows the expected page state. ApiFlash returns image bytes by default, so do not try to parse this response as JSON. - Add a cron entry: for a daily run at 08:00 in the cron host’s local timezone, use
0 8 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /absolute/path/capture.py. Confirm the host timezone and use absolute paths; cron’s environment may not match your interactive shell.
This basic script overwrites the same file on every run. To keep a history, write each capture to a dated filename or upload it to durable storage. Ensure the destination has enough space and define a retention policy appropriate to your use.
Other scheduling options
A hosted cloud scheduler or automation workflow can run the same authenticated HTTP request without maintaining a cron host. Choose based on how you need to set timezones, handle missed runs, store secrets, retry failures, alert on errors, and route the returned bytes or URL. Zapier documents recurring Schedule triggers such as daily, weekly, and monthly, but its surfaced integration listing does not establish that a particular Screenshot API action is ApiFlash. If using Zapier, verify its current HTTP/API action and configure the ApiFlash endpoint explicitly rather than assuming a native integration.

Quota, rate limits, and reliability
ApiFlash’s documentation lists request processing at 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400; excessive burst traffic can receive HTTP 429. These are service specifications, not a guarantee that every scheduled run will complete within a particular time. Avoid launching a large set of simultaneous captures, and use controlled retries with backoff rather than repeatedly retrying immediately.

Successful responses include quota headers, and ApiFlash documents a quota endpoint. Log the HTTP status and relevant response headers, but redact access keys and other secrets. The documented error statuses include:
- 401: the key is invalid or revoked. Check the configured secret and replace it if necessary.
- 402: the monthly quota has been exceeded. Check quota usage and plan limits before resuming.
- 403: the requested feature is not supported by the plan. Check the feature and plan requirements.
- 429: rate limiting. Reduce concurrency and retry later with backoff.
For captures that must reach storage, make the workflow treat the capture and storage steps separately: confirm the API response succeeded, then confirm the write or upload succeeded. Retain enough logs to diagnose failures without recording credentials.
Estimate usage and cost
A recurring schedule can consume quota quickly. Estimate monthly demand as the number of target pages multiplied by runs per page each month, then account for cache behavior: identical cached responses do not count against the monthly quota, while fresh=true forces new captures. Troubleshooting scheduled captures
The screenshot is stale
Identical requests can reuse a cached image under the default 86,400-second TTL. Set fresh=true when a new capture is required, or adjust ttl if caching is intentional. Check that the scheduler is actually sending the parameters you expect.
The image is blank or missing content
Check the target URL and page availability first. Then choose a wait condition that matches the page: try a selector with wait_for for a specific component, or adjust wait_until. A fixed delay is available up to 10 seconds. Do not assume a longer wait alone will fix a page that requires authentication or custom interaction.
The capture fails with an HTTP error
Use the documented status codes to direct the fix: 401 points to the key, 402 to quota, 403 to plan support, and 429 to request rate. Log status codes and quota headers, then correct the cause before retrying. Use backoff for transient rate limiting.

The page looks different from a normal browser
Compare viewport dimensions, format, wait criteria, and any custom headers against the intended capture. Remote fonts can differ, and ApiFlash notes custom headers may interfere with remote font loading. Test the request manually before leaving it to a recurring job.
The capture works locally but not on schedule
Check the scheduler’s timezone, executable and script paths, environment variables, and permissions on the output location. Cron commonly has a smaller environment than an interactive shell, so define needed paths and secrets explicitly.
