The setting most likely behind this change is Custom Instructions: you can tell ChatGPT what context to consider and how you prefer it to respond. That can make answers more relevant when you give it useful, lasting context, but it is not a switch that guarantees specific or accurate advice. The headline describes a personal experience; without the original setting or a before-and-after example, the exact change cannot be confirmed.

How to set up Custom Instructions

Use Custom Instructions for details that should guide ChatGPT across conversations—such as your role, recurring goals, audience, constraints, and preferred response format. OpenAI describes the feature as a way to share what you would like ChatGPT to consider in its responses. The exact controls can vary by platform or workspace.

  1. Open settings. On web or desktop, open your profile menu and choose Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions. On iOS or Android, the documented path is Settings → Customize ChatGPT.
  2. Turn on customization if prompted. Enter stable preferences that are likely to matter in more than one conversation.
  3. Save or apply the changes. If you do not see the same labels, check the current in-product settings; interface wording and workspace configuration can differ.

OpenAI says Custom Instructions are available on all plans on web, desktop, iOS, and Android. See the ChatGPT Custom Instructions help page for current guidance.

What to write to get less generic advice

Specific, relevant directions are more useful than a vague request to “be helpful.” OpenAI Academy recommends durable preferences such as role, tone, output type, and guardrails; its Personalizing ChatGPT guide distinguishes those defaults from instructions for a single task. The following is an editorial example, not an official prescribed prompt:

When you answer, first use the context I provide: [role, goal, constraints]. Avoid generic advice. Give me [specific output format]. Make recommendations concrete by explaining the next action and why it fits my situation. If key context is missing, ask up to two focused questions before recommending a solution. If you are uncertain, say what is uncertain.

Fill in the brackets with details that are both relevant and reasonably stable: your role, a recurring project, the audience you serve, constraints, preferred level of detail, or the output format you often need. For a one-off question, include its particular facts in that conversation; persistent instructions cannot supply context you have not provided. Avoid putting sensitive information into Custom Instructions unless you have considered your account and data settings.

How to tell whether your instructions are helping

OpenAI’s prompt-engineering guidance recommends clear, specific wording and iterative refinement. To apply that advice:

  1. Choose a familiar task where you often receive advice that feels too broad.
  2. Try the task with enough current context for ChatGPT to understand the situation.
  3. Review whether the answer follows your requested format and gives actions suited to your constraints.
  4. If it misses, revise one instruction at a time—for example, ask for a concrete next step or specify the audience—then try a comparable task again.

This is a practical way to tune your preferences, not a formal effectiveness test. OpenAI’s documentation explains the intended controls and prompting practices; it does not establish that Custom Instructions eliminate generic responses for everyone.

Which ChatGPT control should you use?

These controls affect different kinds of context or style. Choose according to what you want ChatGPT to use and how broadly you want that choice to apply.

Control What it supplies Best fit
Custom Instructions Explicit guidance about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond. Stable preferences, recurring context, guardrails, and response formats.
Memory Relevant context that may develop across chats and, depending on availability, other sources. Context you want ChatGPT to remember and use where Memory is available.
Personality A selected response style or tone. A general preference for how answers sound; it does not provide task-specific facts.
Characteristics Adjustable response traits such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, and emoji use. Fine-tuning aspects of response style alongside personality, instructions, and memories.
Temporary Chat A temporary conversation that can be set to Personalized or Unpersonalized before the first message. A one-off chat; Unpersonalized avoids using memory, Custom Instructions, and plugins in that chat.

OpenAI’s Memory help page explains that availability and controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Turning Memory off does not delete past chats, and removing information may require addressing each place where it exists. Personality settings do not change what ChatGPT can do or its safety rules; other instructions and memories can affect the style you see. Characteristics are separate adjustable traits. For a Temporary Chat, OpenAI says you choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending the first message; temporary chats do not create or update memories. See the Temporary Chat help page.

Why answers can still sound generic

  • The instruction is too broad. “Give me good advice” does not tell ChatGPT what outcome, audience, or constraints matter.
  • The current question lacks key facts. Add task-specific details in the chat, even if your persistent instructions already describe your general role.
  • Several preferences compete. A requested tone, format, or guardrail may not fit the task. Simplify the instruction or state which preference matters most.
  • The selected chat mode or account controls differ. Temporary Chat has a distinct unpersonalized option, while Memory and workspace availability can vary. Check the current settings rather than assuming identical controls across accounts.

Custom Instructions guide responses; they do not guarantee that an answer will be tailored, complete, or correct. Treat important recommendations as something to evaluate against your own situation.
