To keep a YouTube Live store promo loop running during a power cut, back up every device in its path: the computer or encoder playing and sending the video, plus the modem or ONT, router and any network switch it needs. Size an inverter or UPS for the devices’ actual load and the runtime you need, then test the whole setup—including the internet connection and public YouTube player—before relying on it. Local backup power cannot guarantee that your ISP’s network will stay available.
What has to stay powered for the stream to continue?
A YouTube Live stream depends on an active encoder and a working internet path, not just on the promo video file or the YouTube watch page. A pre-rendered loop still needs a computer or hardware encoder to play, encode and transmit the video.
Trace the complete chain from the video to the internet connection. Depending on your setup, it may include:
- The computer or hardware encoder running the stream.
- Any camera or audio equipment the stream actually needs.
- The modem or fiber ONT, router, and any switch or access point between the encoder and router.
If you stream from a phone, the phone and its mobile data connection are the relevant path. Do not assume you can switch devices in the middle of a live event without affecting the session; test that change in advance.

How to choose an inverter or UPS for your setup
Measure the load and decide on runtime
List the devices that must remain on and check their watt draw or manufacturer input ratings. Then compare the combined load with both the backup unit’s watt and VA ratings. Watts measure real power; VA is voltage multiplied by current. The UPS’s available watt output must exceed the attached equipment load, as APC explains in its UPS buying guide.
Choose a system with a runtime specified for a load comparable to yours and long enough for the outage you want to bridge. More connected equipment reduces available runtime. A larger VA rating alone does not tell you how long the system will run; battery condition and capacity, connected load and system behavior also matter.

Make sure the backup covers the entire critical chain
A router-only mini UPS may be suitable for network equipment only if its voltage, polarity, connector and current match the equipment—and if it also powers the modem or ONT where needed. It will not keep the encoder running unless that device is separately powered. With an inverter, include every critical device in the backed-up set rather than assuming that keeping the router on is enough.
As one India-market example, Microtek lists an Energy Saver UPS 1025 12V inverter with a 150Ah battery, rated at 925VA, and names laptops and Wi-Fi routers among supported loads. That product listing does not establish a guaranteed runtime for your particular computer and network equipment. Check current product specifications and installation requirements with the manufacturer or a qualified local installer: Microtek Energy Saver UPS 1025 12V product page.

How to account for internet failure separately
An inverter or UPS can keep local equipment powered, but it cannot keep an ISP’s upstream network working. YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream” in its streaming tips. Ask your ISP whether the local access network stays operational during power cuts, then verify it at the shop rather than treating the answer as a guarantee.
A phone hotspot or second ISP may provide a fallback, but a second subscription alone does not prove the connection will work at the shop during an outage. Test the alternate path from the actual location, including upload performance and YouTube stream health. If it is part of your contingency plan, check that the encoder can switch to it and reconnect as expected.

How to set up and test the YouTube stream
- Configure the encoder for the available upload connection. Use settings suited to your source and connection, following YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and testing the setup. Treat that as YouTube’s recommendation, not a measurement of your shop’s connection.
- Run a full test with the intended promo loop. Use the same encoder, backup power, network equipment and source file planned for the real stream. Confirm that the video continues playing, the encoder remains connected, and the public stream can be viewed from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips to check the preview and monitor stream health.
- Simulate the power cut. While monitoring the stream, interrupt mains power to the devices that would be affected in a real outage. Confirm that every backed-up device stays on and that the public player remains accessible. A test that checks only the router does not establish that the encoder or complete stream will survive.
- Test any backup encoder separately. YouTube documents encoder failover, but it addresses some encoder failures—not a shared power or internet failure. If both encoders use the same outlet, router or ISP link, they share those failure points. YouTube’s failover guidance says: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder (or unplug its Ethernet cable) and make sure that the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” Perform that test before relying on failover, and confirm the player changes over as expected.
What to compare before choosing backup equipment
Compare a UPS, inverter and battery combination, or a router backup against your actual continuity needs—not just the headline capacity figure.
- Which devices the unit powers, and whether the modem or ONT is included.
- Rated output in both watts and VA, compared with the measured equipment load.
- Runtime at a comparable load, rather than a runtime figure detached from its test conditions.
- Transfer behavior and compatibility with the devices.
- Battery type, recharge and replacement arrangements, and service availability.
- Whether the internet path has an independent tested fallback.
- Installation and electrical safety requirements for your premises.
Troubleshooting a stream that drops during an outage
- Router stays on, but the stream ends: The computer or encoder, modem/ONT, or another device in the chain may have lost power. Recheck the full device map and back up the missing equipment.
- All local equipment stays on, but YouTube loses the stream: The ISP’s upstream path may be down or degraded. Check the connection at the location and test a separate network path before an outage.
- Backup power shuts down sooner than expected: The connected load may be higher than assumed, the battery may not deliver the expected capacity, or the selected system may not provide the needed runtime at that load. Recheck device ratings and ask the supplier or installer to assess the system against the actual load.
- A mini UPS does not power a modem or router: Verify voltage, polarity, connector and current requirements for each device. Do not assume a generic DC output is compatible.
- A backup encoder does not take over: Re-run YouTube’s failover test and inspect whether the backup encoder and its network path are independently powered and connected. A second encoder does not remove failures shared with the primary setup.
- The stream appears healthy in the encoder but viewers cannot watch it: Check YouTube stream health and verify the public channel or watch-page player from another device and network.
