Use OBS Media Source for one supported local video file; use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist of multiple files. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear in OBS. Neither source type, by itself, guarantees that a YouTube Live playback URL will keep working continuously. The right setup depends on whether you want to play local media, play a network URL, or send your own broadcast to YouTube.
Choose the source that matches the job
| Your goal | Use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one supported video file | OBS Media Source | OBS documents supported media files and playback controls, not arbitrary YouTube watch-page URLs. |
| Play several local files in sequence or shuffle them | OBS VLC Video source | VLC must be installed; install 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. |
| Play a network or live-stream URL | Test the URL in the relevant source | The OBS documentation does not guarantee YouTube playback URLs or expiring manifests as continuous playlist entries. |
| Create and send your own live broadcast to YouTube | OBS or another encoder | This is an outgoing broadcast workflow, not a way to load a YouTube playback URL as a source. |
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes Media Source and VLC Video on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Check the controls and labels in your installed OBS version, since interface details can change.
Set up one looping video with Media Source
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear, click + in the Sources dock, and choose Media Source. Give it a clear name.
- Select the file: In the source properties, choose the local media file. OBS’s documented formats cover supported media files; do not assume that a YouTube watch-page URL is an equivalent supported file.
- Enable repeat playback: Turn on Loop in the source properties if the file should repeat. Use the restart option if you want playback to begin from the start when the source becomes active.
- Confirm source visibility: Keep the source active in the scene. If you hide it or switch to a scene without it, playback behavior may differ from the continuous output you intend; test the scene transitions you plan to use.
- Test the full cycle: Watch the file reach its end and restart, then leave the scene active long enough to confirm the loop behaves as expected before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Set up a multi-item playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC: Install VLC before opening OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS’s documentation says to use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation if VLC Video is not listed.
- Add the source: In the chosen scene, click + in the Sources dock and select VLC Video.
- Add playlist items: In the source properties, add the local media files in the order you want them played. VLC Video is the documented OBS source for a playlist of multiple items.
- Choose playback behavior: Enable playlist looping to repeat the playlist. Enable shuffle only if you want playback order randomized rather than following the listed sequence.
- Check every item: Start the playlist and verify that each file loads, plays, and advances correctly. Test any network or live URL separately; successful playback once does not establish that an address will remain valid indefinitely.
OBS documents the playlist and loop/shuffle controls, but those controls do not renew an expired URL, keep an ended broadcast alive, or automatically restore a failed network source. The documentation does not specifically guarantee that a YouTube watch-page URL, a particular live playback URL, or an expiring stream manifest will work as a continuous VLC playlist item. Avoid treating an extracted internal playback manifest as a stable public URL; test the exact URL, OBS version, VLC version, and network conditions you intend to use.
Keep playback separate from sending a broadcast
A YouTube playback URL points toward content being watched; an encoder sends an outgoing feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies OBS as an encoder option. Loading a playlist in OBS does not itself publish it: to create your own live broadcast, configure OBS to send the scene to your YouTube channel using its live-stream setup and stream key.

If the source is someone else’s live stream or video, get the necessary permission and rights before rebroadcasting it. The technical setup does not establish that you are authorized to retransmit a particular channel or recording.
If you mean YouTube HLS ingest
YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes an encoder sending an HLS stream to YouTube. It requires 1–4 second segments in TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. These are ingest requirements, not instructions for pasting a YouTube playback URL into OBS or VLC.

What to check before a continuous YouTube broadcast
- Live access: YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Stream key: The key lets the encoder send the feed to your channel. Treat it as a secret; do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
- Privacy: YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance describes public, private, and unlisted stream privacy options. Choose the audience setting deliberately before going live.
- Rights and platform rules: Use media you own or have permission to broadcast. A successful local loop does not guarantee that YouTube will allow or keep a stream online.
- Continuity: Run a test broadcast and monitor both OBS and YouTube’s live control room. A local playlist can repeat media, but uninterrupted availability also depends on the computer, network, source URLs, encoder connection, and YouTube accepting the feed.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu | VLC is not installed, or the VLC and OBS architectures do not match. | Install VLC and, for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check again. |
| The source is blank or a file will not play | The file may not be supported, the path may be wrong, or the item may not load in VLC. | Confirm the file path and test that file in VLC. Try a known-good supported local file in OBS to isolate the problem. |
| A playlist stops after one item | Only one item may be in the playlist, or playlist behavior may not be set as intended. | Check the item list and enable loop if the full list should repeat. Test sequence and shuffle settings separately. |
| A YouTube URL works briefly, then fails | The URL may expire, the broadcast may have ended, or the URL may not be supported as a stable source. | Test the exact URL and do not assume that a playback address or manifest is permanent. Prefer authorized media files for predictable looping. |
| The playlist runs locally, but YouTube does not receive a live feed | Media playback is working, but the outgoing encoder connection or YouTube live setup is not. | Check OBS’s streaming configuration and stream key, confirm the channel is eligible to go live, and inspect YouTube’s live control room for connection status. |
| The stream is interrupted when the computer or network goes offline | OBS is running locally and depends on the host computer and its internet connection. | Restore the computer and connection, reconnect the encoder, and confirm the broadcast is live again. For cloud operation, see the option below. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to run continuously without keeping a computer at home online, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera or send streams to other platforms.
