To switch between product demos in an OBS-produced YouTube Live stream, create a scene for each demo, then advance with scene hotkeys or OBS Studio Mode. If the demos run in separate application windows, OBS’s Automatic Scene Switcher can switch scenes when you focus the associated window. That is window-triggered switching—not a documented timed rotation—so it does not by itself make a hands-free, scheduled loop.
Build one OBS scene for each product demo
- Create the scenes. In OBS Studio, add a clearly named scene for each demo, such as “Demo 1 — Setup” or “Demo 2 — Checkout.”
- Add the sources each scene needs. OBS scenes combine sources, which can include application or display capture, browser content, images, and audio. Add and arrange the relevant sources in each scene, and check that the intended demo is visible and audible.
- Choose how you will advance. For a narrated presentation, assign a distinct hotkey to each scene or use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene before transitioning it to the live output.
OBS’s overview describes scene hotkeys, Studio Mode, and transitions. A hotkey gives the operator direct control over when to move on. Studio Mode separates the preview/edit scene from the live scene, letting you prepare the next demo before putting it on air.
Choose a switching method that fits the demos

Set up window-triggered switching
In the OBS 31.1+ League of Legends example, the operator creates a scene for each relevant window, opens Tools > Automatic Scene Switcher, configures the associated windows, and activates the switcher. Focusing a configured window then switches the scene. This can suit demos in separate application windows, but it is not a scheduled carousel: merely leaving OBS open will not make scenes rotate at set intervals.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Scheduling can give viewers a page to visit and enable reminders.
- Enter the stream URL and key in OBS. YouTube’s encoder instructions say: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear before starting the event for viewers.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive-workflow detail, not a guarantee that a long-running presentation will remain live indefinitely.

Preflight and monitor the presentation
- Set up the encoder in advance and rehearse the scene changes. YouTube recommends starting the encoder before the event and checking the Live Control Room preview.
- For a rehearsal, use an unlisted test stream and check both audio and video before the public event.
- During the stream, monitor audio and video quality. Check that the correct demo is on screen after each hotkey, transition, or window-focus change.
- If the event depends on a person advancing scenes, decide who operates OBS and how they will coordinate with the presenter.
What to do if scenes do not switch as expected
- A hotkey does not select the expected scene: check that the hotkey is assigned to the intended scene in OBS and that another application or control has not intercepted the key press. Test it before going live.
- Studio Mode shows the wrong demo live: distinguish the preview/edit scene from the live scene, verify the next scene in preview, then use the intended transition.
- Automatic switching does not occur: confirm the relevant demo is in a configured application window and that Automatic Scene Switcher is active. The documented behavior depends on the configured window being focused; it is not a timer.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: verify that the stream URL and key are entered in OBS, then check the Live Control Room again before starting the event.
- A long-running stream ends or fails: do not treat YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior as a promise of indefinite live delivery. Plan to monitor the encoder and channel rather than assuming an archive threshold ensures continuity.
