You can reset a YouTube stream key in Live Control Room, then replace the key in your encoder. But YouTube’s instructions do not say whether resetting it during an active broadcast leaves the old key valid, allows old and new keys to work together, or keeps the viewer-facing stream uninterrupted. Treat rotation as a controlled change—not a guaranteed zero-interruption operation—and test your encoder and fallback before relying on them.
What rotating the key changes—and what YouTube does not guarantee
A stream key is a credential your encoder uses, together with YouTube’s stream URL, to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private: do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or shared notes. YouTube’s stream settings instructions explain how to reset it.
Resetting generates a new key that you must copy into your encoder. The documented steps do not establish whether the old key stops working immediately, whether both keys can be accepted at once, or whether replacing the key during an active broadcast preserves playback. They also do not describe a rollback or grace period. So there is no documented sequence here that guarantees zero interruption.
Before you reset the key
- Confirm permissions. Only a channel owner or manager can reset the key; editors and viewers cannot.
- Identify the encoder that is actually sending the feed. Have access to its stream URL and key settings, and know how to update them without exposing the new credential.
- Plan a test or maintenance window. YouTube recommends checking the preview before going live and testing encoder failover. Test the actual encoder configuration and fallback path before depending on them for a live change.
- Protect local recording. If you need a continuous recording, confirm separately that local recording continues through the change; do not assume YouTube’s archive covers it.
Reset the YouTube stream key and update the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the Stream tab.
- Find Stream key. Click Reset beside the hidden key.
- Copy the newly generated key and replace the saved key in your encoder’s stream settings. Keep the stream URL and other encoder settings unchanged unless you have a separate reason to change them.
- Use the encoder’s own preview or status information to check that it is sending the feed, and check the YouTube preview before relying on the change. If the encoder reports an error, do not assume that a restart or new connection proves the public stream remained uninterrupted.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new key and updating the encoder for an encoder startup error. That is recovery advice for a startup problem, not a guarantee that a key can be replaced during an ongoing broadcast without disrupting ingest or playback. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.

Update the current encoder
This is the direct route when one encoder runs the stream. It leaves you dependent on whether that encoder can accept the new key and reconnect without a break, and YouTube’s reset guidance does not promise that it can. Test the exact update procedure on a suitable test stream or during a maintenance window before using it on a feed that must stay available.
Prepare a backup encoder and verify rollover
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network connection, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Follow that guidance to check your actual backup setup. It reduces uncertainty about failover, but YouTube does not document it as a stream-key rotation procedure or say that two encoders using different keys can connect to the same ongoing broadcast.

Do not treat starting another encoder feed, recovering from a startup error, and rotating credentials during an active broadcast as interchangeable operations. The available instructions do not establish a sequence that makes any of them a guaranteed uninterrupted key swap.
Plan archive and recording separately for a 24/7 feed
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish how a continuous 24/7 broadcast is archived. If you need a complete recording or dependable retention, plan and verify recording separately rather than assuming the under-12-hour rule covers a day-long stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. It does not remove the need to protect a stream key, and it does not change YouTube’s undocumented behavior when a key is reset, so plan any key rotation as a controlled change.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
