Choose a playback and streaming setup
YouTube’s encoder workflow explains how to send a live feed to the platform; it does not prescribe a particular app or device for looping recorded tours. Choose a software encoder on a computer or a dedicated hardware encoder, and verify that the system explicitly supports continuous or scheduled file playback.
Before choosing, check whether the setup can loop your tour files, recover or restart after interruptions, be monitored remotely, and use YouTube-compatible ingestion settings. Consider its power, internet requirements, and expected operating cost. YouTube describes both software and hardware encoder approaches; neither is automatically best for every property business. Build and label the tour playlist
Arrange the recordings in the order you want viewers to see them and configure the playback system to repeat them. Test the transition from the final tour back to the first; confirm that audio does not cut out, overlap, or become unexpectedly loud. YouTube does not certify a particular file-looping method, so test this behavior in the selected playout software or device.
Make clear in the stream title, description, and on-screen graphics that viewers are watching prerecorded open house tours, not a live camera feed. Avoid suggesting that a home is currently open or that staff are answering questions in real time unless that is true.

Clear property and media permissions
Before broadcasting, obtain permission to show each property and any identifiable people, and confirm rights to music, voiceovers, photographs, logos, and other third-party material. YouTube places responsibility for the necessary rights to live content on the channel operator, alongside compliance with applicable laws and YouTube’s terms. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and its guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions.
Set the encoder’s video and audio settings

These figures apply to the stated H.264 1080p30 configuration, not every resolution, frame rate, or codec. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other configurations. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Test with representative footage, including scenes with motion and the loudest expected audio, rather than judging quality from a static frame alone.
Connect the encoder and go live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create a stream and set its title, description, visibility, and other event settings. The controls are documented in Manage live stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder or playout system’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not display it on screen, share it publicly, or include it in a recording.
- Configure the playlist and output. Confirm the tour files are in the intended order, looping is enabled, and the encoder is set to the resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format you tested.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, playback order, and stream health before starting the public event.
- Check access from a viewer’s perspective. Open the channel or watch page on another device, such as a phone, and confirm that the stream is accessible at the intended privacy setting and that the prerecorded nature is clear.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Keep an eye on stream health and playback. Continuous operation depends on the playback system, power, internet connection, and monitoring; YouTube’s encoder settings alone do not guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
- End the stream deliberately. Stop the broadcast in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder or playout system. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be archived in full; if a complete archive matters, keep the event below 12 hours or verify a current archiving workflow separately. Troubleshoot common problems
- The stream option is unavailable: Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- No preview appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the event. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Playback stops after one tour: The playout system may be set to play a file once rather than repeat the playlist. Enable its loop or repeat function and test the end-to-start transition before relaunching.
- Video stutters or stream health degrades: Check the encoder output settings and whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce output demands if needed, then test again under realistic motion. Use the bitrate guidance for the chosen codec and resolution rather than applying the 1080p30 figures to a different configuration.
- Viewers cannot hear audio or levels are inconsistent: Check the encoder’s audio input, channel format, sample rate, and bitrate, then play the loudest section in the preview. For stereo audio, YouTube’s listed guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- The broadcast ends unexpectedly: Investigate the computer or device, power, internet connection, and playback process. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; reliable continuous playback also depends on the local setup’s ability to remain online and recover from interruptions.
- A full recording is missing from the archive: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. A longer broadcast may not be archived in full, so use shorter events or verify another current archiving workflow when a complete recording is essential.
