If a Happo build is stuck waiting for screenshots, first identify which process has stopped: your CI test command, Happo’s screenshot collection and submission, or a Happo worker handling a request. The message alone does not identify the cause. Use the active CI step, Happo run link, and worker logs to choose the right fix.
Find the step that is actually waiting
Happo describes its workflow as code being pushed, CI running, screenshots being captured, and then comparison against a baseline. A delay at any of those stages can look like “waiting for screenshots,” but each points to a different investigation. Start with the CI output and the linked Happo run or report.
- CI test command is still active: check whether the test runner is waiting on an application condition, an open process, or a request that has not completed.
- The Happo integration is still collecting or submitting: verify that the correct integration command ran and that it exited normally.
- Happo accepted the work but a worker request is delayed: inspect the run and worker logs for request, host, or resource errors.
Do not treat a completed report with one bad screenshot as equivalent to an uncompleted build. The former may need a targeted screenshot retry; the latter needs diagnosis of the still-active stage.
Check the integration command and installed packages
Happo’s steps differ by integration. Check the instructions for your actual path—Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, or pages—rather than assuming a command documented for one integration applies to another. Happo’s current repository says older integration packages were merged into happo, so compare your installed versions with the current documentation instead of blindly copying package names from older guides: Happo repository.

Playwright
Happo’s Playwright guide documents wrapping the Playwright command with happo-e2e. The wrapper combines screenshots into one job and logs a URL when the process exits:
npx happo-e2e -- npx playwright testIf the job never finalizes, confirm that CI runs this wrapper as intended, that the test process reaches its normal exit, and that the wrapper’s output includes the expected Happo URL. See the Happo Playwright guide.

Other integrations
For Storybook, Cypress, or pages, compare the command and configuration in your workflow with Happo’s guide for that integration. Then verify the package versions actually installed in CI; local dependencies and the CI lockfile can differ. If the CI process remains active, inspect its last output before changing Happo settings.
Look for blocked hosts and missing resources
Happo announced the allowedHostnames control on September 23, 2026. It can permit or block hostnames requested during snapshots, and it was off by default when announced. Confirm that the option exists and is enabled in the version and configuration used by your run before treating it as the cause.

When hostname filtering is active, worker logs list allowed and blocked hosts. If a tested page, font, image, API, or other required resource host is blocked, the screenshot may render without that resource. For pages integrations, Happo specifically says the tested page hostnames must be allowed. Review the logs and allow only the hosts the run needs. See Happo’s hostname-controls announcement.
Check readiness, fonts, and nondeterministic rendering
Happo says its documented Storybook and Cypress workflows silence animations and wait for asynchronous assets and fonts. That helps with common rendering noise, but it does not establish that every application-specific data fetch or external request has completed. Check the application’s own readiness conditions and the worker logs for dependencies that remain unavailable or slow.

- If a screenshot is missing an image, font, or page content, check whether its host was requested and whether the request failed or was blocked.
- If screenshots vary between runs, check for application data that changes, delayed requests, or rendering conditions not covered by the integration’s normal waits.
- If motion causes visual changes, confirm that the integration workflow’s animation handling applies to your setup.

Happo documents a single-screenshot retry that regenerates a specific screenshot from a report. Its article lists minimum versions of happo.io v9.1.0, happo-plugin-storybook v4.1.0, and happo-static v1.0.0. The article was updated September 17, 2025; verify the current package instructions before relying on those older minimums. This retry is for a spurious diff in a completed report, not a documented way to unstick an entire build that has not completed. See Happo’s single-screenshot retry article.

Escalate with a useful evidence bundle
If CI output and the Happo run or worker logs do not reveal the cause, contact Happo support through its site or pricing page. Include:
- the Happo run or report URL;
- the CI provider, failing step, and the last relevant CI output;
- the integration type and exact command used;
- the installed Happo package versions; and
- relevant worker logs, especially any allowed- or blocked-host entries.
This information helps separate a command that has not exited from a request or rendering problem without guessing at a universal timeout.
