Start by making the capture repeatable, not by hiding the difference. Happo says it silences animations and waits for asynchronous assets and fonts. For remaining variation, set the app to a defined state; use color-delta tolerance only for minor pixel noise, and ignore a diff only when the changing region is genuinely irrelevant to the test.
Find out what is changing before you ignore it
Compare the failed snapshots and identify the cause: animation, asynchronous rendering, fonts or other assets, external network resources, or app state such as a loading result, hover, or open menu. The remedy depends on the source. Suppressing a meaningful state change can hide a real regression.
- Animation or loading: allow Happo’s automatic stabilization to work before adding suppression.
- Stateful UI: drive the component into the same intentional state for each capture.
- Small rendering noise: consider color-delta tolerance.
- A specific, irrelevant difference: consider an ignored diff, narrowly and deliberately.
- External resources: inspect requests that may vary between runs, then check the current Happo configuration documentation for available controls.
Stabilize animation, assets, and application state
Use Happo’s built-in waiting and animation handling first
Happo says it automatically silences animations and waits for asynchronous assets and fonts. Start with that behavior before adding a separate workaround. If a difference persists, confirm whether the source is application-specific state or a resource that changes between runs.
Make stateful components deterministic
For a changing widget, make the test set a known state before the screenshot rather than hiding the widget. Happo’s Storybook integration describes using interaction tests to reach states such as loading, error, hover, and open menus before capture. Happo also provides Storybook, Cypress, and Playwright integrations; follow the documentation for the integration and version in your project.

For example, decide whether the test is meant to capture a loaded widget or its loading state, then make the interaction or fixture reliably produce that state. A real change from loading to loaded may be exactly what the visual test should catch.
Use color-delta tolerance for minor pixel noise
Happo documents a color-delta tolerance intended to treat small rendering differences as noise, including image-compression noise and anti-aliasing. Consult the Happo documentation for the current setting name and syntax for your integration; the available reference does not establish a safe configuration snippet to copy here.

Tolerance is a threshold for pixel differences, not an instruction to ignore a particular DOM element. Keep it appropriate to the rendering noise you are addressing: a broad threshold can make meaningful visual changes less likely to surface.
Ignore a particular diff only when suppression is justified
Happo’s API reference documents operations to create and delete ignored diffs: POST and DELETE /api/ignored-diffs. Treat ignoring as a review decision. Keep the ignored scope narrow, record why the difference is not relevant, and revisit it when the underlying UI changes.

The API reference includes an optional dataHappoHide Boolean in ignored-diff details, but that field alone does not establish the exact HTML markup or DOM usage. Do not infer an attribute recipe from its name; verify the current integration documentation before using it.
Investigate recurring flake and external requests
Use failure patterns to narrow the cause
Happo’s API exposes a flake listing with optional filters for project, component, variant, target, and SHA. Use the available filters to see whether failures cluster around a component, variant, or target, then investigate the likely source—animation, data, asset loading, or outside requests—before deciding whether to stabilize or suppress anything. Check the API reference for current endpoint and parameter syntax.

Check hostname controls against current documentation
In a September 23, 2026 blog post, Happo announced a hostname allow/block-list capability for snapshot requests. The post said the option was off by default at publication and that requests to unallowed hosts do not leave the worker. Check Happo’s current package documentation for syntax, defaults, and availability before changing your configuration; the announcement is not a substitute for version-specific setup instructions. Happo also reported that one customer reduced flaky examples from about 2,000 to about 20. That is a company-reported result for one customer, not a typical or independently established outcome.
