A user-agent override alone does not reproduce a complete phone or tablet; set the viewport and other device properties you need as well.
Choose a bulk screenshot method
Both approaches can capture multiple URLs with a custom user agent. Choose based on how much control the job needs:

Playwright documents its Page API and screenshot options, while shot-scraper documents the project and command-line tooling.
Bulk capture with shot-scraper
1. Define URLs and output filenames
Create a YAML file such as shots.yml. Give each URL a distinct output path to avoid collisions:

Pass the desired string to --user-agent:
shot-scraper multi shots.yml --user-agent 'Example User Agent'Replace the example string with the exact user-agent value you need to test. CLI options can vary by installed version, so check shot-scraper multi --help if the command is rejected or behaves differently than expected. The documented batch syntax and flag are described in shot-scraper’s multi-screenshot guide.
3. Set consistent capture conditions
For comparisons, keep the viewport dimensions, wait behavior, and other capture settings consistent across jobs. shot-scraper’s multi configuration supports width, height, wait, and wait-for settings. Consult the documentation for the options supported by your installed version, particularly if you need full-page output rather than a viewport capture.
4. Make reruns and failures intentional
The multi command documents controls including --no-clobber to skip existing output files, -o to choose configured outputs, --timeout to set a time limit, and --fail and --skip for HTTP errors. Choose failure behavior based on how the batch will be consumed: silently omitting a failed page can leave a misleadingly incomplete result, while stopping on errors makes failures more visible.

Bulk capture with Playwright
Playwright is a better fit when pages need different waits, interactions, or other per-URL handling. This JavaScript pattern creates a context with one user agent, opens each URL, and writes a full-page screenshot:

It is assembled from documented Playwright APIs, not a tested, drop-in program: add error handling and site-appropriate waits for your pages. Full page or viewport?
Use fullPage: true when the whole scrollable document is the intended artifact. Omit it when you want a consistent viewport-only view. Full-page screenshots can differ substantially in dimensions from one URL to another, so choose deliberately if the images will be compared or fed into a fixed-size workflow.

User agent is not full device emulation
A custom user agent can influence server-side content selection, but it does not by itself set all device characteristics. For a mobile-oriented test, configure the relevant viewport and any required screen or touch properties; Playwright’s device emulation supports those characteristics. Keep the distinction clear: a page receiving a mobile user-agent string is not necessarily being rendered as a complete mobile device.
Make the batch repeatable
- Use explicit output names. Associate every input URL with a predictable filename and avoid duplicate paths.
- Fix the rendering conditions. Keep viewport, browser engine, full-page choice, and wait strategy consistent when comparing screenshots.
- Wait for the right signal. A navigation completing does not necessarily mean the content you need has appeared. Use a selector or other site-appropriate wait where necessary.
- Record failures. Decide whether errors should stop the batch or be skipped, and check the outputs against the requested URLs.
- Sample before expanding the list. Test pages with different layouts and loading behavior before committing to a large batch.
These controls improve consistency, but they cannot guarantee identical rendering across sites: pages may return different content or load differently under the chosen user agent and conditions.

The shot-scraper command rejects an option
CLI syntax is version-sensitive. Check the installed command’s help output, including shot-scraper multi --help, and use the documentation for the version installed rather than assuming a flag from another release applies.

A page is blank, incomplete, or missing late-loading content
The capture may be happening before the relevant content appears. Configure an appropriate wait, delay, or wait-for condition in shot-scraper, or add a site-specific wait in Playwright before calling page.screenshot(). Avoid applying one arbitrary delay to every site if the pages have different loading behavior.
The output does not look like the expected phone view
Check more than the user-agent string. Set the intended viewport and any screen or touch settings needed for the test. A user-agent override is not a complete device profile.
A screenshot is missing after a batch run
Check whether the URL failed, timed out, or returned an HTTP error, and whether the chosen --fail or --skip behavior affected the result. Also check whether --no-clobber skipped an existing file or -o selected a narrower set of outputs than expected.

Playwright stops partway through the list
The example loop does not include per-URL error handling. In a production script, catch failures for individual jobs, record the URL and error, and decide whether to continue or stop. Give each job a distinct output path so a successful page cannot overwrite another page’s screenshot.

Can I use a different user agent for each URL in one batch?
The shot-scraper command described here sets the user agent for the multi command. For per-page user-agent logic, use a scripted Playwright workflow and configure contexts as needed.
Does a full-page screenshot include content that loads only after scrolling?
Full-page capture targets the scrollable page, but sites that lazy-load content may need additional scrolling or waiting behavior. Check the rendered result on representative pages.
