What “how often” means on YouTube Live
YouTube gives creators three mid-roll approaches: automatic placement, a scheduled interval, or manual insertion. These controls determine when an ad opportunity may be presented; they do not guarantee that an ad will serve. YouTube’s systems decide whether to show an ad based on multiple factors. Some viewers may continue watching without an ad, while viewers who do see one can rejoin after it ends or they skip it. YouTube’s live ad settings and guidance explain the available controls.
In the consulted YouTube guidance, there is no always-on-specific optimum—no published interval that is best for every continuous channel. A selected schedule is therefore a creator’s chosen cadence, not an established retention or revenue optimum.

A practical starting point for a continuous stream
- Start with automatic mid-rolls. This follows YouTube’s recommendation and lets its system choose natural breakpoints rather than forcing a fixed interval.
- Review your own channel’s results. Consider viewer experience alongside revenue; the platform does not identify a universal always-on cadence that maximizes either outcome.
- Use a scheduled interval only when you have a reason to prefer one. Choose from 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes, and remember that the setting does not ensure ads will be delivered to every viewer at those intervals.
- Use manual insertion for moments that need deliberate timing. It gives you control over when to insert a break, but skipping insertion means no mid-roll is served.
How automatic placement handles interruptions
YouTube says automatic mid-roll controls are designed to limit disruption: they limit interruptions to channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, and Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. Automatic timing is not synchronized identically for every viewer; the system can present ads at natural breakpoints at different times. These measures do not guarantee that a viewer will or will not receive an ad.

When to delay automatic ads for an important moment

What YouTube’s revenue figure does—and does not—show
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. YouTube says the comparison was averaged across 207 countries and reported in January 2024. This is YouTube’s reported comparison, not a guaranteed result, a causal estimate for every channel, or evidence that a particular scheduled interval is best.
