To make an image contain more pixels, resample it in an image editor or use an AI upscaler. Either can produce larger pixel dimensions, but neither can guarantee recovery of detail the original did not capture. If you have the physical photo or original, scanning or capturing it at higher resolution is often the better starting point. For a print that is already large enough in pixels, change its print dimensions or PPI without resampling; that changes the pixels’ physical density, not the image data.
What “image resolution” means
Pixel dimensions are the image’s actual width and height. An image that is 3,000 × 2,000 pixels contains 6 million pixels, an explanatory example from Adobe’s Photoshop documentation, updated September 28, 2026. PPI (pixels per inch) describes how densely those pixels are arranged when printed. Pixel dimensions, print size, and PPI are related; you cannot set all three independently.
For example, Adobe’s documentation describes a 400 × 400-pixel image printed at 100 PPI as 4 × 4 inches. Printing those same pixels at 2 × 2 inches gives 200 PPI without changing the image data. Changing PPI alone does not add pixels. Resampling does change the pixel count: upsampling estimates new pixels, which may soften the image or introduce artifacts. A larger file is not proof that it contains newly captured detail.
Choose the right way to enlarge the image
| Method | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional resampling | Modest increases in pixel dimensions or routine resizing for a screen or print. | New pixels are estimated; enlarging can reduce sharpness or create jagged, blocky results. |
| AI-assisted upscaling | A substantial enlargement when ordinary resampling does not look acceptable. | It can synthesize plausible-looking texture rather than recover verified original detail. Inspect important areas carefully. |
| Rescan or recapture | You still have the physical photograph or original scene. | Requires access to the original; a scan or new photo still depends on capture quality. |
There is no established universal winner among these methods. Results depend on the source image, the enlargement, and the output. Compare methods on the same image and judge the result at its intended display or print size.

Increase resolution in Photoshop
- Choose the output first. For a screen, determine the required pixel width and height. For a print, work back from the desired physical size and the pixel dimensions available.
- Keep an untouched copy. Resampling can degrade quality, and repeatedly resizing an already-resampled image can compound problems. Start again from the original if you need to try a different size or method.
- Open Image > Image Size. Keep the aspect ratio constrained unless you deliberately want to distort the image.
- Select Resample if you need the actual pixel width and height to change. Enter the target dimensions and choose an available resampling method.
- Inspect the result at the size where it will be viewed or printed. Check edges and fine details for softness, jagged lines, or blocky artifacts. If they are distracting, reduce the enlargement or return to the original and try another method.
Adobe’s Photoshop resizing instructions, updated February 23, 2026, describe the Image Size workflow. Its guidance for screens and print gives rough ranges of 72–96 PPI for typical screen or web use and 150–300 PPI for standard printing; these are not universal requirements. The needed result depends on the output and viewing conditions.
When to try AI upscaling
For a substantial enlargement, compare an AI-upscaled version with conventional resampling. Inspect faces, text, fine patterns, and sharp edges: AI may produce convincing-looking detail that was not present in the source. Do not treat that generated texture as evidence of what the original contained.

Adobe documents Generative Upscale in Photoshop, including a Topaz Gigapixel option. Adobe says this option requires a premium subscription and has a 56-megapixel output limit in that feature. See Adobe’s feature guidance for current controls and availability. Separately, Topaz says Gigapixel supports output up to 32,000 pixels on the longest side; that is the vendor’s stated product limit, not a quality guarantee. See Topaz’s documentation.
If you have the original photo, rescan or recapture it
When a small digital copy came from a physical photograph, a fresh scan may preserve more usable information than enlarging that copy. If the original scene is still available, retaking the photograph at an appropriate resolution is another option. Adobe recommends rescanning or retaking where possible rather than relying on aggressive enlargement. A flatbed photo scanner is relevant for a physical print, but the cited guidance does not compare scanner models.

Set a sensible target and check the output
- Screen use: Set pixel dimensions to suit the display or placement. PPI alone does not make a screen image sharper when its pixel dimensions remain unchanged.
- Print use: Relate the intended print size to the available pixel dimensions. A higher PPI can result from printing the same pixels at a smaller physical size; it does not mean new image detail was added.
- Faithfulness matters: If the image is evidence, archival material, or includes small text, prefer a better scan or capture where available. Treat generated detail from an AI upscaler cautiously.
- Compare fairly: Keep the same source and target dimensions when comparing methods, and examine the final output at its intended viewing size.
Troubleshooting common enlargement problems
The image is still blurry
Upsampling cannot restore detail that is absent from the source. Try a smaller enlargement, start again from the untouched original, or rescan or recapture the physical source if available.
The image looks jagged or blocky
These can be resampling artifacts. Return to the original and try another available resampling method, or reduce the target dimensions. Avoid repeatedly enlarging an already-resampled copy.

The print-size change did not create more pixels
That is expected if you changed PPI or physical dimensions without selecting Resample. Enable Resample and enter new pixel dimensions only when the pixel count itself must change.
The AI version has strange details
Compare it with the original around faces, text, patterns, and edges. If the added details look distorted or misleading, use conventional resampling, reduce the enlargement, or obtain a better source instead.

If you meant a screenshot image rather than an existing image file, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API. It captures a webpage; it does not increase the resolution of an existing image. Its API returns a screenshot as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Here is a one-call cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
