The Switch cannot currently stream gameplay directly to YouTube, according to Nintendo; OBS and a computer are needed for this method.
What you need before starting
- A recorded gameplay video file on your computer. A capture card is only needed if you still have to record longer gameplay from the Switch.
- OBS Studio and a computer that can play the video and encode a livestream.
- A verified YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled and no livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
How do I stream prerecorded gameplay on YouTube?
- Prepare the video file. Confirm that it plays correctly on your computer and includes the audio you want viewers to hear. Keep a separate local copy if the replay matters.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, choose the encoder workflow, and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube’s labels may change; use the encoder setup presented in your Studio account.
- Add the file in OBS. In OBS, under Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Create or select a source, browse to the gameplay video, and enable Loop. Confirm the source is visible in the preview and that its audio meter responds.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key (or use the available account connection workflow). Use the stream URL if configuring a custom RTMP service.
- Set and test your output. Choose a resolution and bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with about 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for settings suitable for your resolution and frame rate; do not assume a bitrate that works for one connection or video will suit another.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then wait for the signal and preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Verify picture, sound, framing, and that playback loops as intended before starting the live event.
- Start the YouTube event and monitor it. Start the event from the Live Control Room. Watch the encoder and stream status while live, especially if the stream is unattended.
How do I loop a video on OBS?
Use a Media Source rather than capturing the Switch screen when you already have a VOD file. Open the source’s properties, select the local video, and tick Loop. OBS repeats the file when it reaches the end. If the source does not appear or play, check that the selected file path is correct and that the file itself opens on the computer. A computer failure, OBS crash, network interruption, or encoder problem can still stop the livestream.
Can I stream Switch gameplay directly to YouTube?
Nintendo says gameplay cannot currently be streamed directly from a Switch to YouTube. For longer footage, use a capture card to bring the console’s video signal into a computer for recording or encoding. A capture card is not necessary for looping a VOD file you already have.

Why the Switch Capture Button is not a full-session recorder
Nintendo’s built-in capture feature saves up to 30 seconds of gameplay from before you press the Capture Button, and compatible captures appear in Album. Some games do not support this feature. Nintendo documents copying captures to a Windows computer over a data-capable USB cable connected directly to the Switch; the dock’s USB ports do not support that transfer method. A microSD card is an alternative transfer route. These short clips should not be mistaken for a recording of an entire play session.
How long can a YouTube livestream run before it stops saving?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If you need a reliable replay, retain a local recording and end and restart the live event before it reaches 12 hours. Each restart creates a separate event; do not rely on YouTube to archive a longer continuous stream.

Check Nintendo’s rules before looping gameplay
Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines apply to livestreams as well as uploads. The guidelines encourage creators to add their own creative input or commentary and say creators may not simply upload or livestream an existing Nintendo video or gameplay footage without their own creative or editorial input. They separately allow posting gameplay videos and screenshots made with Nintendo system features, such as the Switch Capture Button, without additional input or commentary. That allowance should not be read as blanket permission for every kind of extended repeated livestream.
Review the current guidelines before putting a long loop on air, particularly if the video repeats a short clip or includes game music or other third-party material. You need any permissions required for third-party intellectual property, and you must not imply Nintendo sponsors or is affiliated with your stream. Nintendo’s FAQ states: “The Guidelines cover both uploads and livestreams.” The guidelines were updated September 2, 2024.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Confirm OBS is streaming, the stream key and URL are correct, and YouTube livestreaming is enabled for the channel. If this is your first livestream, activation can take up to 24 hours. |
| The preview is blank or the video will not play | Check that the Media Source points to the right local file and that the file plays on the computer. Re-select the file if it was moved or renamed. |
| The video plays once and stops | Open the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is enabled. |
| Viewers report buffering or the stream drops | Check the computer’s stability and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends about 20% headroom over the stream bitrate. Reduce the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again. |
| The stream is live but the archive is missing or incomplete | Check the stream duration. YouTube does not guarantee capture for streams longer than 12 hours; retain a local recording and restart below that threshold when an archive matters. |
| Switch footage cannot be transferred or captured | The Capture Button creates short clips and may be unsupported in some games. For the documented USB transfer, connect a data-capable cable directly to the Switch rather than its dock; microSD is another option. Use a capture card if you need to acquire longer console footage. |

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not live camera capture. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
