For an FFmpeg concat-demuxer playlist, check the affected files’ stream layouts, codecs, time bases, durations, and paths. The right fix depends on the actual playlist, command, logs, and media metadata; a loop option alone will not repair incompatible files or incorrect duration information.
First identify the playlist format
A text file using FFmpeg concat syntax and an HLS playlist (often an M3U8 manifest) are different inputs. The concat-demuxer checks below apply only when your command uses the concat demuxer; do not apply its flags to an HLS playlist without confirming the relevant demuxer.
For concat syntax, inspect the file entries, their order, paths, and any directives. If you rely on FFmpeg’s automatic format recognition, the official documentation specifies that ffconcat version 1.0 must be the first line, with no preceding whitespace or byte-order mark. Diagnose the first bad transition
- Save the exact command and playlist. Remove stream keys and other private ingest credentials before sharing either.
- Find the first skipped file or jump. Capture FFmpeg’s log around the transition, including the preceding and following file.
- Probe the affected files. Compare their stream count and order, codecs, time bases, reported durations, and whether audio and video end at different times.
- Match the symptom to the likely cause. Use the checks below rather than changing several options at once.
Check compatibility, duration, and paths
Gaming VODs have different streams or time bases
The concat demuxer expects all files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Compare the probed stream lists across the VODs, including stream order. If the files are not compatible for stream copy, a playlist flag will not make them compatible: normalize the inputs or use a filter-and-re-encode workflow. FFmpeg distinguishes the concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding, from the concat demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding when the streams are compatible. A file has inaccurate duration metadata
The concat demuxer places the next file using the preceding file’s duration. FFmpeg warns that an incorrect duration—for example, one derived from bitrate or associated with a truncated file—can cause artifacts. Check whether the reported duration matches the actual playable media and whether the VOD is complete. A duration directive can override a stored duration, but use a measured or otherwise defensible value, not a guess. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation
Audio and video end at different times
Check each affected file’s audio and video end times. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally, and streams that do not have exactly the same length can result in gaps. Establish whether the apparent skip occurs at a transition where one stream ends before another; do not assume the playlist has omitted the file.

A path is rejected
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. If the log reports an unsafe path, inspect the playlist entry and path first. Setting -safe 0 permits any filename, but relax that restriction only for playlist contents you trust. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation
Choose the appropriate concatenation method

Common mistakes and recovery
- Changing loop behavior before checking the transition: capture the log and compare the two files around the first failure; looping does not resolve mismatched streams or bad duration metadata.
- Guessing a duration override: verify the playable length first, then use a measured value if a directive is needed.
- Disabling safe-path checks preemptively: inspect the error and playlist paths; only use
-safe 0when necessary and when the playlist is trusted. - Applying concat advice to an M3U8 playlist: confirm the input type before changing concat-demuxer options.
- Sharing unredacted logs: remove YouTube stream keys and private ingest credentials before posting command output.
