If a Urlbox screenshot shows a Cloudflare challenge instead of the page, first check both the final HTTP status and the captured image: a hard block may return 403 or 429, while a challenge can arrive with status 200. Configure hard-block statuses as failures, detect soft blocks by page size or a known challenge element, then retry with stealth and—only if an IP or location issue is plausible—a proxy you supply. None of these settings guarantees access; the site may not permit automated capture.

Identify what Urlbox actually captured

A completed render is not proof that Urlbox captured the intended page. The target can return an error status, or return a Cloudflare verification page with HTTP 200. Check the final status and inspect the screenshot content rather than relying on a successful request alone. Urlbox describes these cases in its Avoiding Being Blocked guide.

  • 403 or 429: treat these as possible hard blocks. A 403 indicates access was denied; a 429 indicates rate limiting may be involved.
  • Status 200 with a challenge: this is a soft block from the perspective of status-only checks. Inspect the image for a verification or CAPTCHA page.
  • Nearly blank or unusually small output: this can signal a block or incomplete render, but size is only a heuristic. Compare against the target’s ordinary output rather than applying a universal byte threshold.

Make hard blocks fail visibly

Use Urlbox’s fail_on option for specific statuses such as 403 and 429, or fail_on_4xx when all client-error statuses should count as failures. This helps prevent an error page from being mistaken for a successful capture. Choose the policy to fit the target: some sites legitimately use particular 4xx responses, so failing every 4xx is not always appropriate. See the Urlbox Render Options.

Detect challenge pages that return HTTP 200

Use output size as a target-specific signal

Urlbox documents min_size_bytes and the small_size retry condition for cases where a blocked page is consistently smaller than a normal page. Establish the threshold using the target’s typical screenshot output; a value that works for one site may incorrectly flag another.

Check for a stable challenge element

If the challenge page has a selector that remains present while blocked, use wait_to_leave with fail_if_selector_present to fail a render where that element is still visible. Confirm the selector against the target, since challenge markup can vary. These detection settings identify likely failures; they do not remove or solve a challenge.

Retry in stages, not on every capture

Urlbox supports retry_on to define retry conditions and retry_with to change options on later attempts. Its guide illustrates a progression from a plain render, to a retry with stealth, and then to stealth plus a proxy if the block persists. The example includes up to three retries; treat that as an example configuration, not a universal recommendation or a success guarantee. The guide says retry options, min_size_bytes, and proxy are available on Ultra and above; check the current plan and options documentation before relying on plan-specific availability.

  1. Start with the ordinary render and collect status plus output signals.
  2. Retry only for configured failures, such as 403, 429, or target-specific small output.
  3. Apply stealth on a later attempt if browser automation fingerprints appear relevant.
  4. Add a proxy only on a subsequent attempt when IP reputation or geographic origin is a plausible factor.

Retries add render time, and each escalated attempt should be justified by a signal you have observed. Avoid blanket retries that simply repeat the same blocked request.

Choose stealth and proxy for the signal they address

Setting What it changes or detects Trade-off or limit
fail_on / fail_on_4xx Marks selected error statuses as failures; it detects hard blocks rather than changing access. Choose statuses carefully so legitimate 4xx responses are not misclassified.
min_size_bytes with small_size Uses unusually small output as a soft-block retry signal. Requires a target-specific threshold; page size alone is not definitive.
hide_headless Urlbox describes this as a lighter option for basic bot detection. It may not address stronger automation detection.
use_stealth Urlbox describes it as a stronger way to reduce browser-automation fingerprints. Stealth renders are noticeably slower. The options reference says use_stealth takes precedence if both stealth settings are set.
proxy or stored use_proxy Routes the target request through a user-supplied proxy, changing outgoing IP and potentially geographic origin. Requires a proxy provider and eligible Urlbox plan; neither Urlbox nor the proxy provider guarantees the site will allow the request.

Urlbox documents proxy and stored use_proxy as requiring Ultra or above; request header requires HiFi or above. Options such as cookies and page-wait conditions are also documented, but changing a header, cookie, or wait setting is not evidence that a Cloudflare challenge will be resolved. Confirm current plan eligibility in the options reference.

When a proxy is relevant—and when it is not

A proxy may be worth testing when the evidence points to the render service’s IP reputation or a geographic restriction. Urlbox’s Proxies guide says Urlbox does not provide proxies: you must bring a provider and configure it. The target site may still block the proxy, and some providers restrict access to high-value domains or require verification or an appropriate web-unlocker product. Check both your Urlbox plan and your provider’s rules before using one.

A proxy is unlikely to help if the actual issue is a challenge script that cannot run, missing browser storage, or a site-owner rule unrelated to the request’s IP. Do not treat proxy use as a general Cloudflare bypass.

Check browser and site conditions

Cloudflare lists several possible reasons a visitor may receive a challenge, including IP reputation, bot detection, custom WAF rules, and Browser Integrity Check. Its challenge troubleshooting also names possible causes of challenge loops: network instability, unsupported browsers, disabled JavaScript, missing storage or cookies, blocked access to challenges.cloudflare.com, and changing user agents. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of a particular Urlbox render.

If the challenge remains after targeted retries, the site may deny automated access or require a human action. Use an authorized access method or ask the site owner rather than assuming another setting will make the capture permissible.
