When a YouTube radio stream goes silent, first check the relevant source’s meter in OBS while the problem is happening. A flat meter points to audio not reaching OBS; a moving meter means capture is happening, so check OBS’s output routing and compare a local recording with the YouTube stream. That sequence helps isolate the fault before you change settings.

Trace the audio path in order

Audio has to pass from the radio source or device through the operating system and OBS, into the encoded stream, and then to YouTube playback. Check each stage in that order. The operating system, OBS release and source type are not specified here, so labels and exact menu locations may differ.

1. Confirm the source is playing

  • Check that the radio is still playing in its originating app or device.
  • Confirm the expected source is present in the OBS scene currently being used for the stream.
  • If sound enters through a physical device, check its connection and controls.
  • Check the operating system’s volume mixer and the originating application’s volume. OBS recommends starting at the device and then checking system and application levels (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).

2. Watch the OBS meter during the silence

Look at the meter for the specific source carrying the radio audio while the stream is silent. If its input indicator is absent or flat, OBS is not receiving audio from that source. The source may have stopped, the selected input or device may have disconnected, or a level or filter may be blocking the signal. OBS notes that its input indicator sits behind filters, so temporarily disable source filters while diagnosing (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details).

Resolve a flat meter at the source, device, operating-system level, or filter stage before investigating YouTube delivery. Avoid raising every level indiscriminately: excessive levels can clip the output.

If the OBS meter moves, check the stream output

A moving meter shows that audio is reaching OBS, but does not by itself prove that the signal is included in the encoded stream. Check these output controls:

  • Make sure the source is not muted and its fader has not been lowered.
  • Check that the source is routed to the stream output.
  • Check which audio track the stream uses in your installed OBS version. The interface can warn when no tracks are selected; the precise labels and mixer layout vary by release (OBS Studio English locale source).
  • Do not use monitoring as proof of stream output. Monitoring is for listening through a configured monitoring device; stream routing determines whether sound reaches the program output. OBS distinguishes these controls in its Audio Mixer Guide.

Compare a local recording with YouTube playback

Make or inspect a recording from the period when the stream is silent, then listen to it and compare it with the live YouTube playback. This separates a capture or OBS output fault from a problem farther along the delivery path.

What you observe What it suggests What to check next
OBS meter is flat; local recording is silent Audio is not reaching OBS, or is being blocked before recording. Playback, selected source/device, connection, system and app volume, and filters.
OBS meter moves; local recording is silent Capture is occurring, but OBS processing or output configuration may be preventing usable audio from reaching the recording. Mute, fader, filters, track selection, and output routing.
Local recording has audio; YouTube playback is silent The local output is healthy; the issue may involve stream configuration, outbound connection, or YouTube delivery. Inspect the encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room for errors, then check the outbound connection.

YouTube advises checking the stream in the encoder and looking for faults in the local archive. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy, YouTube says there may be an issue with the outbound internet connection (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream). If sound is missing only for one viewer, compare playback from another viewer or network before changing the broadcast setup; a single viewer’s result does not establish that every viewer is affected.

Use the timing and source state as clues

If silence starts only after the stream has been running for a while, repeat the meter and recording checks while it is actually silent. Note whether the radio source itself stopped, whether it continues while the OBS meter goes flat, or whether the meter keeps moving but the local recording or YouTube playback loses sound. The symptom alone does not identify a media-source restart, device sleep, or network fault; test those possibilities only if they fit your setup and observations.

Check audio channel format only when indicated

Channel layout is not the first explanation for a sudden silence. YouTube supports mono, stereo and 5.1 live audio; other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo. A radio source is often stereo, but verify its actual format rather than assuming it (YouTube: Stream 5.1 surround sound audio on YouTube).

For a 5.1 stream specifically, YouTube documents a 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps audio bitrate, along with compatible encoder and protocol settings. These are requirements for 5.1, not a general repair setting for stereo radio.

Validate the fix before relying on it

  1. Make one change at a time so you can tell which setting affected the signal.
  2. Record a test using the same sources, filters and output setup as the normal stream.
  3. Listen to the file from beginning to end around the point where silence previously occurred. OBS recommends recording a session as normally used and listening back before going live (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).
  4. Then verify the actual YouTube stream and check the Live Control Room for reported encoder errors.
  5. Keep final stream and recording levels below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping.
