To play several videos one after another in an OBS YouTube Live stream, add them to a VLC Video source in the order you want, keep Shuffle Playlist off, and set Loop Playlist according to whether the sequence should restart after its last video. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Choose the right OBS media source

Use VLC Video when you need a playlist of multiple files in one source. OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for an individual local file and has its own per-file loop setting. Both are available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to the OBS Media Sources guide.

Source Best for Key behavior Requirement
VLC Video Several videos played in sequence Playlist-level shuffle and loop controls VLC installed; 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS
Media Source One local video file Per-file loop; options include restarting when active and showing nothing when playback ends No VLC playlist prerequisite

OBS lists formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM for Media Source. For multiple files, VLC Video is the documented playlist option.

Set up a playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. Install the version that matches OBS’s architecture. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
  2. Open the scene you will stream. In OBS, select or create the scene intended for the YouTube broadcast.
  3. Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources dock, select the add button, choose VLC Video, and create the source.
  4. Add and order the files. In the source properties, add the local video files to its playlist and arrange them in the intended playback order.
  5. Set sequence behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order. Set Loop Playlist on to restart from the first item after the last one, or off for a single pass. OBS documents shuffle off and looping on as the defaults.
  6. Place the source in the scene. Make sure it is visible and positioned and sized as intended in the preview. OBS scenes combine sources into the layout sent to the stream; see the OBS Sources Guide.
  7. Check audio and playback. Play through enough of the sequence to verify the picture, sound, transitions between files, order, and loop behavior before going live.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream in the Live Control Room using YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s streaming settings.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in the stream, screenshots, or public posts. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming.
  4. Start the OBS connection and wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the video and audio are correct before starting the public broadcast.

YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring audio and video quality. Use the same media, audio setup, and stream settings you plan to use during the event; YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also emphasizes testing.

Troubleshoot sequence playback

VLC Video is missing or does not play

VLC Video depends on installed VLC libraries. Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS’s guide calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Then restart OBS and check the source again.

The files play in an unexpected order

Review the playlist order in the VLC Video source and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off. With shuffle off, the source follows the listed order.
