Your YouTube radio livestream usually stops because the computer running its encoder has gone to sleep. Sleep suspends normal app activity, so the encoder cannot keep processing and sending the stream. You can let the display turn off while keeping the computer awake; if the stream must continue with that computer asleep or off, its encoder needs to run somewhere else.
Why sleep interrupts a livestream
A computer-based stream depends on software on that computer to encode and send the broadcast. When the computer enters system sleep, applications stop running normally, and the encoder may disconnect or stop sending video. The computer needs to stay awake for that setup to keep streaming. An OBS Project forum administrator gave the same practical guidance in a 2018 community discussion, though that is not formal OBS product documentation.
A dark screen is different from system sleep. Microsoft documents that a computer can remain fully running whether its screen is on or off. Turning off the display can therefore save the lit-screen power without necessarily interrupting the encoder.
Keep the computer awake while the display turns off
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set Turn my screen off after to the interval you want. This controls the display, not the computer’s sleep state.
- Set Make my device sleep after long enough to cover the broadcast, for the applicable plugged-in or battery condition. If you need the stream to run overnight, choose a sleep timeout beyond its planned end, or use a suitable power source and prevent sleep while it runs.
Microsoft exposes application requests that can keep a system awake, but warns that continuous sleep-prevention requests can drain a battery, particularly on Modern Standby devices. For a normal broadcast, use the built-in power settings rather than relying on a persistent wake lock.

Mac
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen.
- Set when the display turns off for the power condition you are using.
- If the Mac is connected to a power adapter, open System Settings > Battery and check for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Apple describes this option specifically for power-adapter use; do not assume it applies the same way on battery.
Mac settings and labels can differ by macOS version and model. If the named option is not present, use the sleep and display controls available on that Mac.
If the stream still stops
- Determine whether the Mac or PC slept. A screen that went dark does not prove the computer slept. Check the power settings and whether the computer is still responsive.
- Check the encoder. Look for a disconnected status, encoder error, or stopped broadcast in the streaming app. If the computer stayed awake but the encoder stopped, sleep may not be the cause.
- Check the internet connection. A network interruption can stop a stream even when the computer remains awake. Confirm the connection and the encoder’s status before changing power settings again.
- Check the live dashboard and logs. Use them to distinguish a local encoder problem from a connection or platform interruption. The symptom alone does not identify which one occurred.
If you are streaming on a laptop, a long broadcast can drain its battery. Use a suitable power source where practical; an exact runtime depends on the computer and conditions, and cannot be estimated from the available platform guidance.

When the stream must continue with your computer off
Changing sleep settings only helps while the computer running the encoder remains awake. If it must sleep or shut down and the broadcast must continue, encoding has to run on another active computer or a hosted service. Those are separate arrangements from fixing an unintended sleep timeout.
