If Puppeteer reports net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID before taking a screenshot, the failure is usually happening during HTTPS navigation—not in page.screenshot(). For a controlled test that must proceed despite a known certificate problem, set acceptInsecureCerts: true on puppeteer.launch() or puppeteer.connect(). This bypass does not repair the certificate or verify the server’s identity; for a real trust problem, fix the certificate chain or configure the browser environment to trust the intended private CA.

Use acceptInsecureCerts for a controlled test

In current Puppeteer, the option is named acceptInsecureCerts and defaults to false. The Puppeteer API describes it as the option for ignoring HTTPS errors during navigation. Set it when launching the browser, then navigate and capture the page as separate steps:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
  acceptInsecureCerts: true,
});

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://your-test-host.example', {
    waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
  });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Replace https://your-test-host.example with the test URL. The try/finally ensures the browser is closed even if navigation or capture fails. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide follows the same essential sequence: navigate with page.goto(), then call page.screenshot() (Puppeteer Screenshots guide).

If Puppeteer connects to an existing browser

When Puppeteer attaches to a browser rather than launching one, put the option on puppeteer.connect() instead:

Use the endpoint appropriate to your environment. The option belongs to browser launch or connection configuration, not to page.screenshot(). Puppeteer documents it in both ConnectOptions and LaunchOptions; launch options extend connection options.

Decide whether to bypass or fix certificate trust

ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID indicates a certificate-authority trust problem, but the error alone does not diagnose a particular server or deployment. The bypass lets navigation proceed despite HTTPS errors; it does not fix the certificate and the run no longer validates it in the ordinary way.

Approach Use it when Trade-off
acceptInsecureCerts: true An automated test must proceed against a known test certificate problem. HTTPS errors are suppressed during navigation, so the run does not establish ordinary certificate trust.
Correct the certificate chain or trust configuration The browser should establish a trusted HTTPS connection, including for an internal site using a private CA. You must fix the served chain or configure the browser environment to trust the intended CA.

For a certificate that should be trusted

Inspect the certificate chain presented by the site, confirm that its issuing CA is intended to be trusted, and check the trust configuration of the environment running Chrome. Chrome checks whether a site’s certificate chains to a recognized CA and can also use local trust settings (Chrome Root Program Policy). For a private CA, the relevant trust root may need to be installed in the browser environment. A Chromium issue discussion notes local installation of a self-signed certificate’s issuing CA as a trust root; it is not a platform-independent installation guide. The exact procedure depends on the operating system and deployment.

Check Puppeteer version and option spelling

Older examples may use ignoreHttpsErrors. Puppeteer renamed that option to acceptInsecureCerts in version 23.0.0, released on 2024-08-07. Use the spelling documented for your installed release; the Puppeteer changelog records the rename.

Version compatibility also matters when using a separate Chrome binary. Puppeteer publishes a Puppeteer-to-Chrome for Testing version mapping and documents its system requirements. At the time those pages were checked for this article, the documentation surfaced Puppeteer 25.12.0 and specified Node 22.12 or later. These details can change; verify them against the release you install. Puppeteer says it is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser when using a custom executable path.

Troubleshoot errors that persist

  • The same certificate error appears. Confirm that acceptInsecureCerts: true is on the actual browser launch() or connect() call used for the page, rather than on a screenshot call or unrelated browser instance.
  • The code uses ignoreHttpsErrors. Check the Puppeteer version and use the current documented name, acceptInsecureCerts, where supported.
  • Navigation succeeds but the screenshot is blank or incomplete. The certificate bypass only concerns HTTPS errors during navigation. Inspect what the page rendered after page.goto(), and choose an appropriate navigation wait condition for the page before capturing.
  • The bypass is enabled but the site should be secure. Do not treat a successful screenshot as proof of a valid certificate. Inspect the served chain and the Chrome environment’s CA trust instead.
  • A custom Chrome executable causes compatibility problems. Compare its version with Puppeteer’s browser mapping and check the installed release’s system requirements.
